If he won't let you touch him, how will you bring him home? I'd want to take care of him as he may fall prey to a coyote, disabled as he is. Bud would say he's happy where he is, he's been there three years and survived on the kindness of strangers, leave him alone.
Be very careful. It would be awful if, in a misunderstood attempt to help him, he got away from you and was hit by a car or something. This is an environment he's used to and he's afraid of being taken away.

A better solution would be to use a live trap if you can get one. Some humane societies will let you borrow them. I don't know if they'd be big enough...
Leave it set up with food (really smelly like canned cat food) in it a day or 2 before you set it to trap him. A sedative in the food the time you trap him might help with his anxiety.
I've tamed feral cats and stray dogs it can be amazing how quickly some of them calm down when they realize there's no point in trying to fight it.

GreenRiversGoundsHunter ask "Have you thought of a name?" I have been calling him "Old Fellow" when I talk to him. Yesterday when I got to the park he was sleeping under the slide at the children's park. I got out of the truck and walked over close to him and sat on the ground with some food in hand. I said, "Come on Old Fellow" and he came right over. Now I am sure it was the food that got his attention more than anything else but I sensed that he is really looking for someone to be friends with. It is just going to take some time to overcome all that he has been through. I hope today will work out and we will be able to bring him to the vet's office. It is sixty miles one way from my house to the park so I hope I can get help from the vet's office in bringing him home.

The park is very secluded and there is nothing but woods around, that is why it is so hard to find him when he doesn't want to be found. Okay, I am off to the vet's office to see what can be done as far as help is concern. I will give you an update when I get back this afternoon.

I would certainly bring him home and let his last remaining years be happy without hunger, cold or hot weather and fleas. Can't believe that for 3 years no one has taken him home. So sad!

When you get him home, he could bolt, even if sedated. Poor doggy.

You know, you make a lot of sense here...sadly. I would still want to take him home, but a harness rather than a collar, with a good leash, would be important because if he did get away....what a bigger tragedy that would be!

It is now a little after noon and I about to leave for the park. I had to run to the vet's and get some sedatives and some advise on how to handle the dog as it looks as if I will be going by myself again. I have waited here at hone for two hours on someone who promised to help, but----. So I am about to borrow a dog box to put him in once I gain control of him and then I will be on my way. I will talk with everyone later this evening
