Count me in for a few bucks also. If possible, I would like to give him a card over the phone. How is he listed?

ON EDIT: I spoke with this vet's office (Dr.Gradous) in an attempt to help defray some expenses. They say they do not have this animal. Is there a different clinic involved that perhaps we could contact to help with your expenses??

I wonder if the HSUS is aware of that. Too bad it's that way there. Our last two dogs and our three cats came to us from two different, excellent, well-run Humane Society chapters, one in our area here in northern Minnesota, and the other down south near the Iowa border. Because of that, Humane Society for us is synonymous with true animal protection.

There has to be some authority around there that actually cares about animals.

Good luck with Old Fellow, who isn't so old the way it sounds. I hope he survives the heartworm treatments and finds his way back to health and happiness. At least now he's in caring hands.

I'm so glad to hear the stories of Old Fellow! Glad he's in good hands and hope he has a long and happy life.

Just wanted to clear up a common misconception. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is *NOT* some sort of head organization for other Humane Societies. There isn't one. Humane Societies and SPCAs are independent organizations.

If you're worried about conditions at a local Humane Society, then you need to contact the organization that runs it or supports it, sometimes the city or county, but most often just a group of caring citizens that doesn't get enough financial help from local authority.

I've been following this thread but not posted. I must say that what you have done for this little guy is wonderful. I still find it hard to believe the number of people who think that dogs are "property" and to be treated as such. The fact that they do not provide proper health care and shelter is apalling.

Perhaps you might contact PETA (people for ethical treatment of animals) at PETA and see if they can do something. THey are a pretty radical group, but do get things done. Perhaps it might shake him up enough to get his act together. It would be a shame if this man treated his horses the way he treated that poor dog. It would also be a shame if he got another dog and did the same thing.

Okay this is what I found out. Officially Old Fellow is not yet a patient at the clinic. This was done so that his bill could be adjusted without a lot of red tape {whatever}. Starting Monday he will be officially a patient of the clinic you spoke of. Starting Tuesday you may call the clinic and donate to Old Fellow's vet bill using you credit card if you wish. Tuesday I will post the name of the clinic with its address and phone number for those who want it. I am sorry for the confusion.

Pyrographer,
I don't want to start a war here - but - PETA does NOT care about companion animals. They are in to farm animals/animals raised to be food/etc. Don't believe me? Then check with the Humane Society of the United States, or Best Friends, or Noah's Wish or any of the legit companion animal protectors/rescuers and ask them if they have heard from PETA after Hurricane Katrina. PETA is nowhere to be found or heard from!! Not a word, not a dollar, nada. PETA sux.

PETA is indeed a radical group. If you want the truth about where they stand on companion animals (AKA pets) you need to do a bit of research, perhaps look closely at their website. In short, they do not believe people should be able to keep pets.

Two PETA employees were indicted for animal abuse and illegal disposal of remains here in Virginia last month (or was it July?). Seems they destroy most of the animals they "rescue," then these two just tossed them into the garbage or dumped them alongside the road.

PETA's headquarters is in Norfolk, by the way.

Waynesboro Burke Humane Society P.O. Box 1245 Waynesboro, GA 30830 Also search by county, or look for another organization such as ASPCA, Noah's Wish, or others. The Waynesboro Burke County Humane Society is operated by a part time employee who comes to work at 4 0'clock in the afternoon and leaves at 7 each evening. The shelter where they keep strays is almost as bad as what Old Fellow has been through. Pitiful situation
I believe this is true in many areas, We live in a large county (Orange County) in S. Calif. which has a large affluent population. Unfortunately I would not donate to our local spca. I give to private rescue organizations. That's why I looked for another organization to donate to, rather the the spca of america, for the Katrina animal victims. Some cities have better run shelters than other...I will be sending a check to help with the medical expenses for Old Fellow..God Bless...Barb
