You should feel good about what you're doing - and WE all feel good about what you're doing, too! Give Old Fellow an extra scratch behind the ears from our gang!

Ditto GreenRiver:

My rescue lived through heart worm treatment as did my sister's. My friend's dog died of heartworm because she didn't know you were supposed to treat the year around. Inside dog, too. But he only had to get bit once. It was a difficult death. So you are doing the right thing.

Good luck. I wouldn't worry about that owner. I would tell him you want the dog to be healthy and have a happy home. Perhaps he would be willing to concede on those grounds. If not, you have plenty of ammo for neglect.

We found a stray and she had heartworms, went through the treatment and lived 10 more years, we don't know how old she was, but we think around 2-3. This poor dog might not be as old as he looks since he was so cruelly cared for (or should I say uncared for).

I can't see how anyone who totally neglects an animal would even have the nerve to claim ownership. He obviously wasn't cared for in any way at all.

Heartworm is bad, but treatable. It is a nasty death if not treated. We (at the shelter) have had to put some older dogs down that came in and the case was so severe that we did not treat them and this is a no-kill shelter, so they were BAD. The coughing was horrible.

I agree with everyone else; if he really tries to claim the dog then he should pay the vet fees and answer to your local humane society.

Ownership of Old Fellow has been resolved, treatment continues. He had a good night and the outlook is good for a full recovery. One of the ladies who works for the vet has shown an interest in giving Old Fellow a new home.

Whether it's with you or some other "interested" person, he will hopefully live a few more quality years. :)
