I would tell the rancher to sue you for the dog and you will in turn sue him for neglect and cruelty and the vet bills. What does he want this dog for anyway, sounds to me that he sure doesn't spend any money on them. Make him prove ownership with prior vet bills, etc.

....He cautioned me that he may not survive the heart worm treatment. So what do you think?...
[b]This is where I stop giving advice. If you trust the vet, then ask what he would do.
I'm with Walter. It may be that the vet will not want to make this decision for you...however, I could be wrong here, but I think heartworm is eventually fatal for a dog. I'll say this--whatever you decide will be the right decision and certainly one nobody here will second guess it.

Me too.

Is there no SPCA in your area? There must be some law for basic humane care...Ruined my day.[emoticon] Barb

If the so called owner presses the issue then allow the vet to talk to him about what needs to be done to maintain "quality" of life, get him healthy enough to go home and about pet containment in order to keep him safe. If said "owner" doesn't agree to do all of the above then you and the vet have a case against him....it is called neglect and your local SPCA or Humane Society or perhaps the county animal welfare people would be glad to hear about it. They will take the next steps and y'all be free of the hassle so you can work on doing what you can for the dog.

THANKS for doing right by the dog, to heck with the so called owner. Good luck!

Old Fellow is undergoing treatment as this is being written. Regardless of the outcome of ownership I am going to see to it that he gets the best of care. His heart worm condition is the first order of business. When he has overcome that then we will take care of the rest of his problems. He is doing well and is comfortable right now and has excepted his confinement. He and the vet are getting along fine. He has forgiven me for his captivity and even wagged his tail when I spoke to him. I feel good about all of this in spite of the other business. I will visit each day and give reports accordingly. Thanks so much for all of your support it means a lot and Old Fellow thanks you too.

Poor thing he was only scared. He's probably in his glory getting all this special treatment. I'm still amazed in what your doing and how your taking care of the problem. My prayers are with you and Old Fellow.
