rvrdrunner,

I had to have the booster replaced on my 78/79 recently. There was a leak in the diaphragm inside the booster. It is now way easier to brake.

Is yours the vacuum assist booster? Or the hydroboost? I'm familiar with the vacuum assist, this kooky booster threw me at first.

I do think I figured out that the hydroboost is self-bleeding, like the power steering it's run off of. The procedure is cranking the wheels back & forth without hitting the stops.

One thing to note, the hydro systems require periodic flushing to maintain maximum efficiency and overall lifespan. Not a complex process, just potentially very messy!

My problem must be air in the lines, today I'll get out and use the vacuum pump to flush and bleed the system fully. It sure seemed as if the fronts were not fully effective.

Anyone who hasn't taken the time to read this entire thread should take the time to do so, there is a wealth of information contained herein, hopefully, I'm adding my two bits as well.

thanks again to all!

I am not sure--I don't know much about brake boosters. I thought it was called a hyroboost, but I seem to remember that the leak was discovered during my last smog test so I think it was a vacuum leak. The booster is attached directly to the master cylinder. Does that help? How can I tell which it is?

We just bought a 1979 Dodge chassis Brouham. Not too sure who made them, but it is clean....found it through another site, and talked at lenght with the present owner. I swear it's immaculent inside....Now we have to figure out when we make the trip to pick it up.....We're hoping for a break in this cold, so we might be able to camp in it on the way home.....Wwe can't wait....

How can I tell which it is?

The vacuum booster is a huge metal can-like thing, with only one big hose plugged into it.

The hydroboost unit is much smaller, and has several lines that screw in from different directions, with threaded fittings, much like power steering hoses.

Both units link directly to the master cylinder, supposedly the hydro units were used in the vehicles with very high GVW(gross vehicle weight)

Nice to see some new action! Welcome to the newcomers, and happy camping!
