Topic: How many of us are there? Owners of Dodge based RV's?

Posted By: JDMopar on 07/31/10 07:48am

Howdy all....brand new to this forum, first post here. Please be patient with my stupid questions in the future...lol. We have a 79 Dodge Brougham that we purchased back in April. It had a brand new 440,brand new 727, and a brand new Gear Vendors OD in it when we bought it. It runs great, and has dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers on it. The coach part was/is in really good shape, and you can tell it's always been taken care of. We did a remodel on the inside, with new carpet, curtains, cushion covers, etc. My wife made all the covers and drapes, and I installed the carpet. We also installed a newer sleeper sofa that came out of a 2009 big ol Avion class a bus. We hope to have our first outing with it when we go to the Mopar show at Bristol Dragway Sept. 3rd.

Hello JD!

And welcome to the thread! There is no such thing as a "dumb question".
Trust me on that. Ask away whatever you may- most of us have done some
really great things here, and are happy to answer and help. If you succeed in stumping us totally, dumb looks are still free! lol

Leeann and Trish kinda keep us in line here, and are great to step up and help- ask them if you get turned around or lost here. There's a lotta stuff here... browse and get to know us!!

Happy trails!!

Took the motorhome out today for the first time since November. The Drive Shaft fell out onto the street. I recovered it and had it towed. Friends are telling me it should not be too expensive of a fix. Anyone agree?

Another note. I have good Sam Club Road Side Service. They could not find a tow for me. The police had to call for one since I was stalled at a light. I am very disappointed at their service. I will keep you updated if they reimburse me. [emoticon] It was $ 133.75

The service garage just called me. They gave me a quote of $275 to repair. I am going to go ahead and get the oil changed while I am there which is another 30 bucks. Does the quote sound about right? Thanks,

It cannot be fixed until Monday. I was going to go camping tonight. [emoticon]

EDIT: Getting ready to call Good Sam Club for towing reimbursment. Lee Ann, I hope you are wrong in what you said. [emoticon]

Hi and welcome!

I've never had a shop do u-joints, so I'm not sure about that quote. What exactly does it entail?

When our driveshaft hit the road this summer, I believe the root cause was a failed carrier bearing, which sheared one of the 3/8" retaining bolts for the U-joint. It went into resonance and vibrated at ~30mph a few times, them BAM! Fortunately, I was able to get the bolt out rather easily (whew!). Also, the drive shaft had to be replaced as it was damaged. Once I obtained the drive shaft and carrier bearing, it was an easy fix, maybe 45 minutes to remove and reinstall while it was in "storage" at one of our campgrounds with no lift. No idea on the price, as it was really easy.

Good Sam was fair to us. They towed us to a campsite because it was a Sunday and couldn't find a shop immediately. Once we determined that we couldn't get it repaired that day, we had them move it the next day to storage (that took a little "convincing").

Good luck and keep updating the forum!

Edit: If you have no other damage, I'd recommend you do it yourself.

Yeah, but what could I do? [emoticon] It was pretty much stranded there. If I would have called other places etc, I would have had to tow it again.

Here is what is on the bill:

Oil Filter and change: $27.77 ($16.28 of it was labor)

2 Universal Joints 43.86 total

Rear straps: $17.98

Drill one pinion bolt (both) Includes R and R drive shaft. 3 hours labor at $67.00 an hour. $201

Total Labor: $217.28
Parts Total 73.33
Tax total: 23.25

TOTAL> $313.86

"$67.00 an hour." is not bad... RV dealers in Tucson are charging $100+ an hour and mechanics between $75 and $100.

when I'm "allowed to" I do good cheap work... I just have to get past my DW, MIL and doctors. [emoticon]

JD,
Congrats on the new to you Brougham... it looks real nice... obviously well taken care of.... much better than mine was... I am impressed by how well the paint looks on alot of these old Brougham's.... they must have used good stuff.
Enjoy your new toy...

I don't think anyones dying statement ever contained the words "I wish I had spent more time in the office", so lets go somewhere!
