Split year manufacture is a normal thing in motorhomes - the manufacturers buy a chunk of chassis, then build on them as they need to. On occasion, you'll even get a 2-year difference in build date. Ken I have one plate on the drivers door frame, dated 11-78. Four on the outside on the passenger side to the left of the door. One RIVA, One Dept. of Labor, One State of Idaho and One from FW-Tioga. It's original Vehicle Registraton Certificate is listed 1979. So it's more clear in my mind that I have a 1978 Dodge MB400/440 My unit was completely refurbished. A new one pc Aluminum roof folded over the side wall with new inside ceiling. New A/C, New three way Fridge. New toilet. New heater. New tires. New CD/Radio and a New Engine now with 14,000 miles. Oh, it came from the factory as a LPG/Gas unit and still operates with either. The Paint is like new. 30 years old and counting. I bought it for $3,600 with all the updates. At 74 this MH will out live me? I have cancer. And after owning at least 10 other new and used MH's, I'm like a kid with a new red wagon. I love driving the old critter. goreds2 wrote: ![]() Tomorrow, I am going to look at a 1976 DODGE SPORTSMAN 16FT MOTORHOME with generator, 360 engine, cold AC, good tires and awning for $2000. It sounds too good to be true but I am having fun looking at these older models. Does anyone have knowledge of these models? Thanks in advance. I ended up purchasing this for $1800. I brought a friend along who is a mechanic and he could not believe how clean this is. It has more room than you would think. It is a 16ft which will be easy to park off my back alley. The only thing it may need is front shocks. My budget was $4000 so this is no problem to replace. It is my first RV! I just have to ask for a suggestion. It came with a brand new $500 / 4000 watt generator. It is fastened in the back. Does anyone have a suggestion on a possible box this could be placed in? It is exposed. Thanks! * This post was edited 09/11/08 04:46am by goreds2 * See Picture In My Profile I have a 1989 Dodge XPLORER RV Class B - Purchased 10/15/10 IN CASH Fiance' purchased a Class C 2002 Dynamax Carri-go on 5/1/15 IN CASH We've got the best of both worlds |

goreds, I assume based on your discription that the generator is not built specifically for the motorhome? Are there any outside compartments large enough to install it in?.. congrats on your new toy... sounds like a good buy. old&slow, I think these old motorhomes will outlive us all... sorry to hear of your illness,, I really hate cancer.. my prayers are with you I don't think anyones dying statement ever contained the words "I wish I had spent more time in the office", so lets go somewhere! |

I think I'm jealous ![]() I also am sorry about your cancer, but glad to hear you're not letting it beat you. Some people just fold up and die with the diagnosis. Front shocks are not a big deal - make sure you get ones specific to RVs - we got Monroe RV, but a lot of people have had good luck with the Bilstein RV shocks too. The only thing I can think of is a box with clasps. Or a more permanent box with louvers for airflow, a cutout for the exhaust and and exhaust extension on the genny to make sure it goes out. Oh, and an access door for the easy stuff; checking oil, filling fuel, that sort of stuff. |

Thanks all for the good wishes and prayers. I'm outliving the time given by the Doctors. There is nothing better than a good camping trip for the soul. Some days I'm kinda unsteady and recently was camping in the hill country of Texas when I fell and seperated the tendons in the left elbow that required surgery. Better now but the Doctor's orders, no camping for six more weeks. This thread is great for owners and future owners of the Dodge based RV's. So much info'. One thing for me. Should have had the brakes checked before the first trip. The left front caliper locked up and required a complete brake job with new rotors and all. The 16' $1800 RV would have been good for me too! I just wonder if these new RV's will be good 30 years from now? On my deal the previous owner keep the unit for over 20 years and upgraded just about everything and then decided to get a new MH. The book on my MH is only about $1600 but the condition gives me a great value. And the wow I get when others see it is great. I did notice a MH not long ago like Leeann drives and it too gave me a WOW. I agree, cute. I'm old enough to remember the 60's/70's when these rigs were new. Back to the future. They remain with us. Great comfort then & now. |

I had a 1977 Brougham, We bought it from a former friend ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We went on a trip with it. On the way home everything quit.....winshield wipers, defroster, heater, headlights. And that wasn't the worst trip we ever had in it. Remember "Without Trucker's America Stops" "Buy American Made Only!" It's too late to save your shoes..roll up your pant legs "When all else fails..Amateur Radio" I need more Coffee & Old Bushmills If We Can't Haul It..You Don't Need It. Motor-T Semper Fi |

goreds2 wrote: That compartment is probably an ''optional'' OEM genset compartment that if not used was just another storage compartment. When used for a genset the door is vented (cut and large vent put in), holes cut in the floor for the genset blower fan and exhaust, along with holes for battery cables and the fuel line.![]() There is a compartment but it is on the opposite side of the cord location. I will figure something out as in building some type of box. (Best wishes old&slow.) The output from the genset would be flex conduit to a 120vac sub panel that may or may not have a circuit breaker(s) installed. From there it would route to the shore cord compartment with wither romex or flex conduit to a 30a RV receptacle in a junction box. This jbox is the poor mans transfer switch as you need to plug the shore cord into it to get power from the genset to the inside and the chances of it failing are nil. Ken |
