You've done all the other tuneup stuff and checked all your vacuum lines? We went from about 5" to about 20" just by replacing plugs/wires/coil and vacuum lines (I'd already replaced cap & rotor, ballast resistor, ignition module, voltage regulator). Made our brakes work, too ![]() '73 Concord 20' Class A w/Dodge 440 - see profile for photo |

Wow! I get busy, turn around and you guys have done eighty pages or so!! I have to pay better attention! And I have some reading to catch up on... I was going to ask if anybody with the 440 (mines a 79) has a oil smoking problem. I read that the valve seals can cause it, but I've had those replaced. I'm thinking the old girl needs a freshening. It just runs so good I hate to tear it down. Anybody rebuilt a 440 in one of these fine ol' Dodges? Anything I should really pay attention too? Anything I could check that could cause oil smoke? Thanks for any help. Retro |

Retro - Are you sure it's burning oil (blue smoke) and not fuel (black smoke)? We had to tinker like crazy with the ThermoQuad to get the mixture right and stop it blowing black smoke at idle. We did have an oil leakage problem, but it was the valve cover gaskets. |

I've found that if it is the valve guides, (oil burning), normally it will smoke badly when 1st started then fade to minimal smoke at operating temp. Meaning when the engine is shut off, oil will drain into cylenders and burn off quickly when 1st started. I'm back............. ![]() Gary Webb Phoenix, AZ ![]() |
