Leeann wrote: ![]() Eric - back to your carb issue. Hi Leeann I don't have a carb issue anymore (other than trying to figure out the vacuum lines). I've rebuilt mine and the truck is running and driving, though not well. I've installed new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and coil. Now I need to tune the engine up. I wanted to time the engine and couldn't find the timing marks from below (like my manual states). I did find the marks up near the water pump, but they are about as useful as a hole in my head! The ONLY way to use them is to remove the master cylinder and the power steering pump! Then I contacted my Moparts friend Casey (who is a Dodge van expert) and he told me that some of these rigs are actually timed with the transmission! Yep! He was right! Right there on top of the bell housing was a hole with a wire straight across it that you shine the timing light through to the torque converter! So, I start the truck up to warm it up. Just for giggles, I looked under the front and saw a bunch of fluid running onto the ground. I smelled it- GAS! Quickly shut the truck off and went through the lines to make sure nothing was loose. Fired her back up, same thing. This time I studied where it was coming from and found the fuel pump to actually have a hole in the side of it! New pump purchased, but the rains have kept me from installing it. Perhaps this week-end. BTW, it's a 360 with the (editied for content) Holley 2v on it. Hey, at least it's not a BBD! ![]() I really think the poor running issue is sunk valve seats (leaded fuel engine), but I'll do a proper tuning first before I make my final decision. I also suspect the dizzy is installed incorrectly, but I can't be sure until I get the timing marks lined up. And odds are good the timing chain kit is shot... She ain't purdy, but at least she's slow! ![]() |

And that's peace of mind ![]() Didn't you have a problem with a vacuum leak on your brake booster? ... or am I thinking of someone else? Yep, you were thinking of me. Turned out mostly just to need the tuneup - the vacuum gauge at idle didn't read real over 5 psi until the plugs/wires/coil were done (cap/rotor/ignition module/ballast resistor/voltage regulator already done) - and one vacuum line. Soon as we did that, BRAKES (and 20-something psi)! '73 Concord 20' Class A w/Dodge 440 - see profile for photo |

glw: RE: rumble ... check your driveshaft. It may be 90 or 180 degrees out of sync. Try disconnecting the rear u-joint and turning it 180 degrees. Also, check the shaft for looseness and lack of grease ... a loose, out-of-balance, or out-of-sync driveshaft can cause weird harmonic noise. 79powerwagon (Eric?): What year? (I backtracked the thread a bit but didn't find it.) If I recall correctly, most 360's had unleaded heads - meaning hardened seats. An old-timer told me long ago (around the time most of our motorhomes were built), "Timing first, fuel second, vacuum system third." Yes, some Mopars had timing marks on the tranny, especially vans and Class C motorhomes ... made things a whole lot easier. BTW - from your description of the timing marks on the timing cover, it's a later LA engine ... unless a PO retrofitted it with a new timing cover. Original LA engines (late 60's) had no timing marks on the timing cover ... timing marks were on a stamped metal tab that bolted to the timing cover. Then, Mother Mopar went to a cast-on timing marks in the right (passenger) side of the timing cover. Finally, with the aluminum timing cover and water pump, the timing marks were cast onto the timing cover on the left (driver) side. My '69 318-3 had the original timing cover, without cast-on timing marks. I'm converting to the newer aluminum timing cover and water pump, with the timing marks cast onto the timing cover on the left (driver) side. Reason #1 - newer water pump is superior to older water pumps. Reason #2 - newer water pumps are readily available while older style water pumps can be hard to find. (Guarantee - your friendly neighborhood parts shore will insist the newer style pump is correct for your engine 'cause that's all they list.) Downside of conversion - you need to change the radiator 'cause the water pump inlet is on the other side. (I'm replacing radiator anyhow so it's no big deal for me.) If anyone wants it, I can list references for looking this up. Leeann - you sure didn't sleep long ... does the spring info look helpful? Edit: Forgot to mention ... Holley 2V good ... Carter BBD is a royal PITA. (Run a couple of bottles of Heet through a BBD and you can kiss the seals goodbye ... did three rebuilds before I learned that lesson.) Had a Holley 2V on the industrial 383 in my '66 Dodge Polara. I know some people in the 70's replaced the BBD's with Holley's. 1970 Explorer Class A on a 1969 Dodge M300 chassis with 318 cu. in. Griff, it's a 1972 engine (according to the emission sticker still on the valve cover). There is no markings or lables stating "Unleaded Fuel Only", not even on the gas gauge. The Holley I have on there is slightly newer than the original one that was on there (bought it at a swap meet for $5.00!), so the vacuum lines are not the same. My goal is to first fix the fuel pump, then set the engine to #1 TDC, both valves closed on #1, check the dizzy to be sure it's pointing to the #1 plug wire, check for the timing mark on the tranny, and start there. At least I'll know I'm starting in a "fresh" set-up. Of course, this will also tell me if the timing chain set is shot or not... And yes, it's Eric. ![]() |

Heh, the only (edited for content) 2v Holley is the CA lean burn version. The El Dorado had it because it was originally a CA vehicle...they're a total PITA to get right because everything has to be exactly right...exactly exactly. The other version is okay. I also think you already have hardened seats...the '75 360 I had briefly did. By the way, our big issue on the 440 was the PO put on the wrong fuel pump - he put on the HD version instead of regular (our tank is 3' from the motor, at the same height). Once we replaced it with the correct pump, no more flooding, stumbling, black smoke... I've got the Holley svc manual for the 1920/1940/1945/2210/2245/5200/5210 carbs: http://rapidshare.com/files/53785289/2245.zip If you haven't done ballast resistor/ignition module/voltage regulator, you might want to. They're weak points and can cause all sorts of running issues. The bf had a six-pack on his '72 Polara police edition with 440 ![]() Griff - I told you I was late going to bed! Yes, it does look helpful. Will look more closely once I'm home again. |

Well... I'm going to call in aprofessional on this one. 3 hours trying to get the lights to work properly on the trailer with no progress. New harnesses and all. I don't get it. The trailers (which is fine with my truck) acts all shorted out when plugged into the RV, yet all the lights on the RV are fine. I have a 4 wire harness... any TWO... doesn't matte which... any two trailer wires on the RV will give me "continueity". Something is fubar'd somewhere, and I'm not the electrical guy to track that one down. Anyone have any last minute suggestions? I have to pull the trailer to Detroit tomorrow. |
