I was at an auction yard yesterday where plenty of tow trucks and transporters gather and saw a new Dodge rollback with the Hemi emblem on it roll by me. It is built to carry one while towing one in the stinger so times are changing!

I was thinking of trading my 15' 2500HD 6.0L gasser for a 2017 2500HD Diesel. I bought a new Sandpiper that weighs around 12,600# loaded. My 15' actually pulls it nice, no white knuckles. I thought well a Diesel would run like nothing is behind it. Then I looked at the tow ratings and to my massive surprise the Diesel tows less then the gasser 14000# Gas Verses 13500# Diesel.
So I would pay something like $7k more to tow less, doesnt make sense to me, Yes I know the Diesel would run like nothing is hooked to it but my 6.0L gasser say's I got this, no problem. I pull through the PA mountains and never had to put it to the rug.
Im Just Really Surprised about the tow ratings

Ya may want to look at the number of big issues with the injection pump in the 2011-latest models of the 2500HD...not good, seems they tend to blow up throwing millions of steel particles throughout the fuel system requiring a complete re-build from the Fuel tank to the IP...$ 30K up here in Canada on average for warranty cost....and a week or so to get it done.

One wonders why the cp3 on the LBZ/LML (I believe the LML did use the CP3), models wasn't good enough..?? I'm sitting at 313,300 miles on my 06 - ZERO changes to my fuel system other than triple filtration - FASS system & 1 Post OEM 5mU filter....HG's done a while ago and it runs like a raped ape. Still using the orig injectors too.

Engineers for ya, always trying to re-invent the wheel.

Cheers...look for an 06/07 classic...with the LBZ motor..10.5 -11mpg pulling a 5th wheel. No gasser will get that...EVER.

The best I can get is 7.5mpg pulling my 12600# Sandpiper

There's the difference....towing capacity seems like a big deal to the Dealer that wants to sell a truck. 7.5 VS 10mpg at worst is a 35% increase on fuel costs...using a gas drive. And I would argue that, yes a diesel does have a bit higher maintenance costs...but if ya do it right (By-Pass oil fil - Extra Fuel filtration, it will outlast a gasser in longetivity & give significantly better mileage hands down.

I concern my self with 5th wheel pin Weight, GVWR and whether I can safely hook up without going over my rear axle GVWR & Tire rating....I know the motor can handle pulling up to 20k....its the suspension n rubber capability that's important to me...just sayin..

Cheers

Agreed, you need to look at those figures as well. My pin weight is 2100# and the trucks payload is rated for something like 2950#. Im close but within the maximum limits

That's the only drawback with the0 06-07 years...if I recall correctly, mine is only ~2k capacity SRW...so can't be pulling a 36' Montana anytime soon..lol.

But have thought that when it's time to hang up the Tools...swap out the axle, get a good used Dually rear end w / suspension and a pair of white dually fenders.... At least then I will feel ok knowing my truck and it's idiosyncracies....and keep all the upgrades I've done over the years.

Well good luck on whatever path you choose...just don't travel up here to Alberta just yet, there are numerous massive forest fires in BC right now with westerly winds a blowing.! Am at work in N Alberta and visibility is down to half a mile.... You'd think this was the Kuwait Oil Fires redux..

I'm seriously considering trading my 03 Cummins with 220k on a new Chevy, or Ford 3/4 , since my trailer is only 10k.
I drove one last night and it was sweet, and everything works including the ac at idle.

I just bought my 2017 2500HD LTZ with a 6.0L I was thinking of going with a diesel but after reading up on the new diesel I decided against it due to the fact some are having some issues with and and I found out people are reporting only getting around 10-12 mpg towing. Sure the diesel has tons more power but it rated to tow 100# less then the gas due to the extra weight nevermind the $10,500 up charge for it.
I traded in my 2015-2500HD that had the 6.0L and it towed my 12000# fifth wheel through the mountains at 75 mph without putting it to the rug and to boot I was getting 7mpg
Don't get me wrong, The diesel is one hell of an engine but I really didn't want to pony up the extra cash when the 6.0L pulls like a brute.
If I had an extra 10k laying around it would have been a no brainer.
She sure is a beauty

The one I drove had the small back seat, and I would rather have the bigger one. I guess that means more money for a different model.
The Fords I looked at all had large back seats
