Most Diesels come with two batteries for starting.

It looks like the Chevy gives you the option, and standard is a single of both.

Considering the low price of these two options (a couple of hundred bucks) then I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and get them.

So How does the dual alternator work?

Are they simply ganged together or do they power separate systems on the truck?

The two batteries same question?.. Is the Aux a HOT standby in-case the primary fails or are they simply ganged together in parallel supplying 12v at a higher current for turning? If the second is the case then yes you will get better starter turning but when one goes bad then you can expect the other to go bad at about the same time doubling the replacement cost!!

Well on my Ram CTD they are in parallel, one one each side of the engine bay, both grounded to the frame with a 00 cable between the positive post!

This is one place where maintenance on a diesel can cost more. I just needed to replace my batteries, never one always in pairs.
I got two 72 month OEM batteries at the local dealer for $178 total for both!
The beauty of dual batteries, swap one at a time and you don't loose radio presets!

I have to believe the aux batt option is for a gasser. Never have I seen a diesel of any brand with one batt.

Been towing a 5er for 15 yrs and one alt has been enough. Option may be cheap till you have to replace one on your dime. The only reason I can see is like was said before, running a big inverter for a welder etc.

On the way to work today there was a ford superduty diesel 6.0 or 6.4 in the slow lane going about 5 mph billowing white smoke.

I just went right by him in my chevy 6.0 gasser.

No point to this post, just what happened this morning. Everyone knows what the problem is with those engines.

So a gasser can pass a disabled Diesel going up a hill? You are right, pointless. What is the problem with those engines?

Youngsters... The first vintage diesel pickups had one battery. Cold weather starting with glow plugs and heater grids is why they went to two batteries.

Even Liz's 1986 Blazer has two batteries. So does a 1986 F350. The 1989 Ram diesel had two.

Say what?

The price of gas has gone nuts here in California. Luckily, I haven't had to buy any for my daily driver....for the last twenty years or so.....[emoticon]

That's crazy. Why does CA pay a full $1 more per gallon than FL. The Prez makes oil companies out to be a bad guy for making 20 cents per gallon wile the government makes $1 to $1.50 without any work or risk????????????????????

That is exactly what is wrong with California. They have a spending problem in Sacramento, not an income problem. The balance is a state tax. Now, they have proposition 30 which is asking for more money for schools. WTF! The lottery was supposed to pay for that and it does!!! Sacramento is just dipping into all of its funds and now they are out of money. This state is beyond repair. 15 billion in illegal alien subsidies and that is only counting a part of the freebies. What a joke.
