Quote: 13.25 mpg high towing
10.29 mpg low towing
An average of 11.46 MPG after towing 2309.6 Miles
Very few gassers if any are going to touch that kind of mileage towing. That and 37% of my total miles have been towing. With that kind of towing miles it just made sense to buy a diesel.
PS. Total towing miles actually equals 2989.5 of 8044.2 total miles. I only used miles where the entire tank was towing, otherwise my average would be much higher, but not a true picture of towing mileage.
I've got a 5.9L Gas engine that tows 8,000lbs and still gets upwards of 13mpg. Worst was around 2mpg though, pulling a 4.5% grade at 55mph. Typically my worst has been 10mpg with that trailer. (Trailer is a 3,000lb car loaded with my 5,000lb jeep)
Any larger engine than that though, becuase of needing say HP and torque. Diesel is the only way, the larger gas engines just suck a lot of fuel.
The cummins engines, I keep hearing about pulling upwards of 18mpg towing the same weight trailer I have.

You get 13 MPG with 1996 dodge with a 360 with a 3.92 gear while towing?
I guess that is possible, but you are not towing something that is punching a 12' tall by 8' wide hole in the air. Hook up my 7100lbs 5er to your truck and then tell me what your numbers are. I promise you that you will not be anywhere near that 13 mpg.

Largest I towed, physical size, was a 24' camper. Probably trying to punch a 10'x8' hole in the air. It probably weighed in around 7,000lbs.
Max speed I'll typically go is 62mph, as that is where I get my max fuel economy. Which can be as much as 18mpg unloaded, but is typically around 16mpg.
Even towing, I do drop it in to OD when I can. Which is typically at 70-75mph and 2,000rpms.

I'd be awfully surprised if you got 13 towing a TT at 62 with 5.9. It's barely rated for 12 city/ 16 highway. But if you say so.

I used to get better than that towing a 28', 9,000 lb 5er with my 6 liter 1500 HD. That went down the toilet when I hit any hills but as loing as I was on flat land, I could get as high as about 16 mpg.

Great thread filled with good information. I just completed a 6000 mile trip around the country in with my GM 8.1 V8. The overall average will be within a tenth or two of 7 MPG. The noise of the gas engine when pulling a long hill in a low gear was a bit annoying sometimes. My toad is a PT Cruiser. It was 'in tow' every mile on the motorhome. I talked to many diesel coach owners and they reported approximately 11-12 MPG 'in tow'. I noticed the diesel coaches like the trucks pull the hills much better/steadier.
But my coach is not on the road year round...yet. When I'm ready, I will look very hard at a diesel. But it takes a long time to save back $20k - $30k purchase cost increment for a diesel. I haven't found a real good incremental cost comparison. If someone has some current figures, I'd love to see them.

Hi DanaMc,
See page 1 of this thread, about 1/2 way down the page. I ran a diesel vs gasser cost comparrision.

Heh, could this thread handle another post? ![grin [emoticon]](http://www.coastresorts.com/sharedcontent/cfb/images/grin.gif)
I'm in favor of diesel in general. VW cars with the 1.9L TDI get 40MPG to 50MPG and have great drivability. Dodge Ram with the 5.9L Cummins can get 20-24MPG on the highway. Heck, with a couple simple mod's I got 21MPG out of an Excursion with the 7.3L. And so on...
Pair excellent mileage, drivability, and long-life with the fact they can run on a biodiesel/diesel mix and that's why I prefer them.
Ok, off to read 150 posts...

Still 30 cents less than gas, better milage, and 3 times more power than I ever had with a gasser.
My history:
1) Gas Ford Ranger (gasser) with pop-up camper
then...
2)F150 (gasser) with Pop-up followed by 23ft TT.
then...
3)F250 (my first diesel) with 23ft TT followed by my current 29ft TT
now...
3) F350 (6.0 diesel) with my 29ft Wildacat TT
Milage with the F350:
11 towing
13.5 around town (stop and go)
23 highway
