While having new Michelin's installed on my MH last month, I was taking to the tire store manager while my tires were being mounted and I asked him about the new super singles. He said they are advising against the new super singles for MH use.

1. if you cup a front tire you cannot rotate it to the rear, so you will have to the replace the front tire(s) ouch, expensive.

2. If you have a blow out on the front, and cannot get a matching tread from a local dealer, you cannot borrow a rear tire to get you down the road to find a matching tire.

3. If you have a blowout on the rears, you are pretty much stuck for awhile as the super singles are still special order.

In his words, "they are not practical for MH use. Stick with what is a popular tread design and you will never be stuck for long if you have a tire problem while on the road." I thought his last statement was very good advise. If you have ever had a tire problem on the road you will know just what he meant.

We like to ski camp in winter. Bet they suck to have to wrap chains around.
Lets see...lousy traction in severe weather, getting a replacement in the event of a flat is next to none, expensive as hell, less load carrying capacity...

no thanks.

I share the concern of the OP re running anything on my MH at its MAX capacity, including the super single tires. What I have learned in this thread has convinced me that my original decision to ignore the super singles was correct despite the advertising blitz by Michelin.

Following some of the logic on this thread I need to look at converting my front tires to duals. [emoticon]

It is really interesting how ideas come and go. I remember about 15 years ago when someone (I think Michelin) developed an auto tire that was two skinny tires on a special rim. Anyone else remember that?

Have you ever had a tire fail on a dually??? Or more likely you just guessed what would happen?

Let me tell you about the trip my wife took with a flat tire. My wife took our dually to southern Ohio. Father in law checked tire pressures for her before she began the 186 mile drive home. He had filled the bed of the truck with fresh cut firewood. Two days later she took it in for a new exhaust. The mechanic found a hole on one of the inside tires as big as his fist. Had the other tires blown out I doubt she would have made it home. The thing I was surprised about is the flat tire didn't catch fire.

Hauls better 1/2, 3 kids, myself, and a 2003 ez go clays car.. I have added so far, neon lights, clearance lights, back up lights, black light, lift kit, mud tires, and everything necessary to make the golf cart street legal. It's now ready to spend the winter in the garage for more mods. More neon, strobe lights, alarm, a pa system, maintance, and whatever else that comes along. This golf cart does wheelies and travels thru 7 inches of mud when need be. Two honda eu2000i gens twinned to supply the electrical power. Latest addition an 04 Honda Goldwing. I see these conversions as trying to fix something that isn't even broken....and, at a pretty high initial cost disadvantage!

JMHO...why bother????

While at our local TCI tire shop, I noticed a stack of super-singles. The manager said Michelin sells Wheel-tire combos to help get the market moving. Check with michelin or your local 22.5 inch tire provider.

When converting from duals to super singles you also lose 4" of track because that big heavy tire has to be centered. You'll enjoy that "clenching"feeling going around curves untill you get used to it.

I have to agree with other posters -- Why? Just because a truck might have them does not mean a motorhome should. Other posters also mentioned the problem -- should that single tire go flat or blow-- having that extra rim and tire is a life saver. We blew in inboard dual and if we'd not had the outer one...who knows what would of happened but I know it would not have been much fun or pretty! Having all the weight of your axel on 2 tires will put them under a lot of strain -- I'd think it could even shorten thier life span. Besides I reckon any mpg increase may not be enough to justify the risk & cost.

I think it very important for people to discuss all this as we all get our facts out there, therefore we all know what we are getting into. Personally - I'd consider this a fad and pass it up. Be safe not sorry! I'd sure hate to hear someday you had a blowout with that big super single and were injured!
