Yesterday, I had to replace the 20 pound propane cylinder on my grill. No problem, I keep a spare. Today, I take the empty to get it refilled. The technician says "sorry, I can't fill it." I asked why, and he pointed at the date of manufacture. It was October 2002. That tank expired in 2014, and I have been refilling it every year or two since it was new. And, before anyone asks, that particular location is the only place that I have ever taken it to get it filled.

Well it looks like you finally got a tech doing his job.
You can take it in, get re-certified, or you can swap it out at one of thousands of exchange places.

You can have the tank inspected and recertified.

This is what I do. I am not in favor of skirting laws. This regulation has been around for some time now but not all dealers actually enforce it. I can take my old tank into the local propane dealer, leave it with them and they will recertify it for less than $10. If I am in a hurry, I will just trade it in and then refill the "new" tank as long as I can.

I just trade mine in periodically and get a newer one (check the date codes on the collar when you exchange to make sure you aren't getting one that will be out of date soon) I don't typically need a refill but about once a year anyway depending on how may turkeys I fry during the holidays.

I had that almost happen... But(It still had one refill left).

Call around to BIG propane places.. many do re-cerets.

In Flint, MI Parker's' propane does them.

I suspect Carmichaels in Tekonsha might (But they are hard to find unless you have either a good GPS. Good Directions... Or in my case... They bought the farm from my Dad).

Other palces I have not checked. But most MAJOR propane places can do it. Some, like Parkers,, are even reasonable.

Some places won't trade if it's expired.
