I have driven many of those roads.
CA Highway 139 is my go-to route to head north. Much nicer drive, scenic, and lots of places to pull over for a dry overnight or just hang out for an hour or so.

US 385 in Colorado from the Oklahoma panhandle to the Nebraska stateline is spot on as a real lonely drive. Whole big empty out there in eastern Colorado plains.
