I experimented my two camping trips trying to keep my speed down to 65mph on the interstates for mileage. I did not keep as accurate a log as possible & just went off the truck computed MPG. I used the cruise control set at 65 as much as possible on the first trip, 500 miles total. Second trip, about 250 miles, I just kept up with traffic about 70mph, sometimes hitting 75mph.
The truck calculations said I got better mpg in normal transmission mode over tow/haul mode when towing. On my first, slower trip, I locked out all overdrives (8,9,10), using tow/haul every time I thought of it (reverts to normal on startup). On the second, I mostly just kept 9 & 10 locked out. That one level of overdrive, in flatter road sections, seemed to make the difference, even though at higher speeds. I intentionally left normal mode on after initially forgetting to select tow/haul.

Yes, wind is a variable factor in mpg. BUT it is out of your control, last I knew [emoticon]

If you are on a tight schedule, true.

Full timing, I often check the wind forecast. If I'm going to be going into a 30mph headwind...I may wait a day for the wind to settle down.

If anyone thinks that adding an air deflector DOES NOT help is delusional. Air going over a trailer vs. slamming into the top of the trailer is a real thing. How much? Can't say, but it's a reality.

No bug splatter on the front of the trailer means the air is being moved up and over the trailer. Also the .5 mpg improvement says it works as well!

I don't see how anyone could detect that small of a difference. It would take a precise fuel consumption measuring device and identical driving conditions. I see huge difference merely due to traffic, wind direction, etc.

Again, where is the data? I could not find results of any studies.

Well 3 years and 20k towing miles after its use shows that it works. I did the same trips big before and after and there was always that .5 difference. Sure sometimes it may have been less, sometimes a bit more but it always averaged .5 better with it.
