We’re visiting Hocking Hills from 7/1-7/6 and New River Gorge from 7/6-7/11. Looking for suggestions on things that are “must do” and day trips within 90 minutes or so please.

Hocking Hills area is pretty neat:
Cedar falls, old man’s cave, and rock house are must do’s while there.
One of my favorite places is the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, OH. You can easily spend all day there and it’s all free; and should be less then 90 minutes away. I’ve been there 4 times, have not seen it all, and never been bored.
Just to say you been there - a quick stop at the pencil sharpener museum is pretty neat.

The pencil sharpener museum is closed.
The air force museum is more like 2 hours from Hocking Hills.
There is lots of hiking trails at Hocking.

Be sure and try the pizza at Pies & Pints in Fayetteville WV. It can get crowded. The road down into the gorge and under the bridge is a nice ride.

Ancient Earthworks and Mound Cemetery
When the ancient Adena and Hopewell Indian cultures disappeared, they left 95 acres of ceremonial burial mounds, passageways, and embankments.

The founders of Marietta knew that these earthly artworks were important, so they made an effort to preserve them. In fact, they built another mound around the original site.

Some of the ancient ceremonial structures still stand, including the 30-foot Conus Mound in the Mound Cemetery. At the top of the cemetery are graves of the founding Revolutionary War veterans, including Rufus Putnam and Benjamin Tupper. Actually, it has the highest number of Revolutionary War officer graves in the nation.

Also nearby is the Ancient Earthworks, an archaeological site that resembles an Aztec temple. You can tour both areas.

For New River Gorge, Pipestem and Bluestone state parks are nice. They are not right at the gorge but 90 minute drive from Pipestem and 60 minutes from Bluestone. Pipestem is one of the nicest state parks we've ever been to. They have everything.Horseback riding, archery, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis, golf and minature golf, nature walks and boating. They also have 2 restaurants. One you take a table car to get to.
