In light of the recent sad news about the plane crash near Washington DC and the scramble to intercept that plane by F15s, I saw several video clips of people reacting to the sonic boom made by the F15s.

I got to thinking that many people probably have not ever heard or experienced a sonic boom. Having grown up in the St. Louis, MO area where McDonnell Douglas was producing F4s during the 50s (probably testing) and 60s (entered into service in 61), I remember common, if not frequent sonic booms as the sped away from Lambert Field.

Just brought back memories.

I remember the occasional sonic boom as well, having also grown up in a suburb of STL during the 50's and 60's. After the first few booms, it was like "no big deal".

Oh yeah, I grew up about 5 miles east of Omaha and we used to hear the booms every once in a while from planes out of Offut AFB.

These "Payne Stewart" type plane crashes need to leave some sort of warnings via their transponders, to nearby air traffic, that there's been a cabin depressurization at altitude, and the passengers and crew may be disabled or dead by hypoxia, and unable to respond.
They would have been dead before they hit the ground.
With the amount of technology in modern aircraft, you'd think they'd be able to get the plane's avionics and/or controls to send out a mayday with that information prior to the final crash. So that any chase, or other, nearby aircraft response would be aware of what's going on, on/inside the "target".

Lived near Hanscom AFB in Bedford, MA for years. Heard them occasionally as well.

I grew up living on George Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert. This was a fighter pilot school, flying and training in F4Cs preparing for Viet Nam. We heard sonic booms all the time. It was after my dad retired that they more or less outlawed producing sonic booms over populated territory. I always felt sort of sad for young kids who never got to hear one of these things. That hit me when they showed video of people in their apartments and on their streets as they reacted to an unknown (to them) sound.

Spending our winters near Cape Canaveral, we hear sonic booms often - it's half the fun of watching a SpaceX booster come back to land! Long-time residents say the shuttles used to come in "hot", too. The best "BOOM" was the planned explosion of a test Crew Dragon rocket after jettisoning the crew capsule - we were sitting on the beach at Cocoa Beach with kids/grandkids - sadly, it was cloudy so we didn't see the explosion, but we sure heard it!

Went down to Edwards AFB back in August 1982 to watch the Space Shuttle Columbia land after its last test flight - the double sonic boom created by the shuttles when they were landing was pretty impressive!

I lived in Prosser Washington in the 70s. Every Wednesday at around 8pm you could hear 5 sonic booms. I never did see the plane or planes that caused them. After a while it was like the air raid/fire siren that went off at 12pm every day. You heard it but it no longer bothered you.
