One of my relatives kid around 30 years old sufers from ocasional depresion.
Hes financialy well off and does sports running etc,but one time he went to donate blood doctors told him his iron level is too low so they refused his blood donation.
Found out hes a vegan and dont eat meat.
I figured thats the problem.

I couldnt last half a day If I didnt have meat or fish every day.
Never been depresed in my life yet.

In milions of years of human evolution people survived on eating meat and fish mostly,so without meat people cant be healthy and human body needs meat protein.

Besides cows eat plants, grass, hay flowers and turn it into meat,so beef is basicaly made of plants so cow, deer, moose etc is one big vegetable.
Why would vegans avoid it is a mystery.

If I had a way to prove it I would bet most people that suffer from depression also eat meat.
And as tow people in the past mostly eat meat? Doubtful. Sure, pre-historic pictures show successful hunts. But if you lived in the times when you had to carry camera, buy film, take pictures, send film in wait, you will remember most times pictures where taken was special occasion. I would think Kodak was much easier then using rock to carve on wall.
Without refrigeration it takes a whole lot more work to store meat than grain. I have heard a theory that most of European exploration of the world was to find spices needed to stand the taste of meat that has been dead for week.

Folks, if you wish to discuss the topic please do so without flaming, or insulting, the OP! You, and they, should be able to express an opinion; provide valid research on the topic, etc. without making it a personal attack. IME, there are as many studies and papers that support either mostly vegetarian diet for our ancestors, as there are studies and papers the support the meat eater theory. Take your pick. But the statement that vegetarianism causes depression is a facile statement.

First off correlation does not prove causation; just because there is a correlation between a diet and the prevalence of depression does not prove the diet caused depression. It only indicates both occur together. Perhaps depression causes someone to look for a change in diet to relieve the depression; or something else is causing both the depression and the desire to abstain from meat. Or they are unrelated.

Curious why the correlation between depression and diet became the focus since there is also a stated correlation to financial success, running, gender, low blood iron (can be caused by other than diet), perhaps age.

Meat and mental health: A meta-analysis of meat consumption, depression, and anxiety
Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition

Quote:

Conclusion

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to extend our previous systematic review (Dobersek et al. Citation2020) and provide quantitative evidence to inform clinicians, policy-makers, and future research. Our results show that meat abstention (vegetarianism or veganism) is clearly associated with poorer mental health, specifically higher levels of both depression and anxiety. Our cumulative analyses suggest that the more rigorous the study, the stronger the relation between meat abstention and mental illness. However, the current body of evidence preludes temporal and causal inferences, and none should be inferred.

This study suggests, previous studies finding a correlation between depression and diet may not properly grouped the subjects in the association studies.

The link between vegetarian diet and depression might be explained by depression among meat-reducers
Food Quality and Preference
Volume 102, December 2022, 104679

Quote:

Abstract
Recent studies have reported an association between vegetarian diet and depression, although results have been inconsistent. This effect has most often been attributed to nutritional deficits among vegetarians. An alternative possibility is that individuals who are trying to reduce their meat intake experience cognitive dissonance related to enjoying meat on the one hand and being aware of the ethical problems with eating animals on the other. The tendency to include such individuals in vegetarian samples in previous research could explain recently reported effects. The goal of this study was to compare depression in meat-eaters, meat-reducers, and vegetarian/vegans in terms of depression to test this hypothesis. I compared depression scores across three measures in two large North American community samples between meat-eaters, meat-reducers, and vegetarian/vegans. Meat-reducers had higher depression scores than either meat-eaters or vegetarian/vegans. This finding suggests a novel explanation for previous findings and orients this field towards somewhat new questions and research directions.

From what I can find, it doesn't sound like there's anything conclusive that links veganism and depression. I could see maybe the iron deficiency angle, but there's probably something more at play than just not eating meat. There's a lot that's still unknown about depression and a lot of people can suffer from it even when it seems from the outside like they shouldn't. What he should probably do is talk to a professional and see if he needs meds, therapy, or both. If he has the motivation to do sports running, something's gotta be going alright that can be worked on.

What kind of research proves a connection between the depression and veganism? I have some vegan friends and all of them seem to be happy people, so never ever i gonna believe in that. I can agree that people on a special diet should take a better care of themselves and make a research on different supplements on Canadian Pharmacy Online website in order to avoid deficiency of some elements.

I was clinically diagnosed with dangerously low red blood cell count. Transfusion time!
I felt like ****
To maintain a reasonable labs I have to take B supplements, Iron, beans, or meat
Meat occasionally. I wish I didn't have to do all that

But yes my mood was definitely in the dumpster along with utter exhaustion.

Your mileage may vary.
But I do blame the Chemo.

I do not know if or what the link between Depression and Diet is but I find MUSIC can often treat it.... You need a large range of music from Rythym and Blues to Wind and Rythym (That's a radio show google it and listen to an episode or 3) Modern to Classical... and you may find some tunes that basically blow your depression... away.
