Today, I feel even worse. I'm disappointed and embarrassed because we've identified a welding defect in a small number of the Pittsburgh 3 ton steel jack stands (SKU 56373) that replaced the recalled jack stands. We're now adding these jack stands to our recall. Unfortunately, this defect wasn't discovered during the initial recall investigation. If you own these jack stands or any of the jack stands in our original recall, whether or not you have had an issue with them, please stop using them immediately and bring them back to your local Harbor Freight Store for a full cash refund or store credit (see details here.

What's less shocking, that the original HF jack stands were bad or that the replacements are also bad?

I've bought plenty of stuff from them, but nothing that I'd bet my life on.

Out of fairness, I've searched through the major news outlets and https://news.google.com and haven't been able to find anything to substantiate this. I found one YouTube video from a guy who saw something on Facebook, but that's not much of a source.

Not that this info isn't true, but I can't find any credible reporting on it yet.

Jack sku listed above is included,

3 Ton Jack Stand 56372
56373

Link is at the end of the first post.

HF is ok for some lightly used tools, but for anything that requires precision and strength, I would pay the extra for, especially if it is something supporting over 5000 pounds like the front of my truck.

Like stated earlier..

I only buy small tools, hand tools, gloves, tarps, ratchet straps.. ect from HF... Nothing that would/could fail and cause harm or worse.

They are great for Super Coupons

To the Harbor Freight Community:

I'm writing to apologize. I often reach out to tell you about Harbor Freight's commitment to quality and all the investments we've made to deliver quality tools at the lowest prices. Your trust matters deeply to me and I'm proud of how far we've come. So when we have a product recall, it hurts.

A few months ago, we recalled our Pittsburgh 3 ton and 6 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56371, 61196 and 61197) due to a manufacturer's defect. We asked customers to return them and receive a gift card that could be used to purchase replacement jack stands. I felt terrible about that recall because you should never have a concern about the safety of any of our products.

If you own these jack stands or any of the jack stands in our original recall, whether or not you have had an issue with them, please stop using them immediately and bring them back to your local Harbor Freight Store for a full cash refund or store credit (see details here).

We have investigated all of our other Pittsburgh 3 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56371, 56372 and 57308) as well as the Pittsburgh 6 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56368, 56369 and 56370) and Pittsburgh 12 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56374 and 56375) and did not find the defect. Although none of these other jack stands are being recalled, if you own any of them and have any concern whatsoever, please bring them back and we'll give you a full cash refund or store credit for those as well.

I want to apologize to all of our customers. While we've dramatically grown our team of engineers and inspectors, and intensified our tests and inspections, I assure you that the lessons learned from this will drive further improvement.

As the owner and founder of Harbor Freight, I want you to know that we stand behind every product we sell and that safety will always be our top priority.

Sincerely,

Eric Smidt

Thanks Red. So far there aren't any news reports to substantiate the email as a new/recent occurrence. We'll keep an eye on it.

While I enjoy making fun of HF as much as the next guy, I want to make sure we're being fair and accurate. A Nigerian prince taught me years ago not to believe everything that lands in my Inbox. Fortunately he was telling the truth and made me a very wealthy man.

I saw the picture of one of them that had failed a week ago or so.
Definitely not good.
I always put a secondary block to that if one of them fails, the secondary block will catch it.

I would ask Eric Smidt to slide under every product they sell. I'm getting to the point where unless a product has an ISO 9000 compliance issued by the final vendor in the USA I skip it. The final vendor is 100% responsible for authenticity of ISO 9001 accrediting.

To date the Chinese have not built a single jet engine. Not even a copy of a private passenger jet engine never mind military, that has survived 60 seconds on a test fixture. Their military jet engines are 100% made in Russia.

PLA container ships are built in special PLA shipyards that use dedicated PLA steel mill output. Every single welder is hand picked.

Too many times steel that was supposed to be 1010 ANSI did not meet specs for this most common and cheap grade of steel.

I was first alerted to Chinese sloppiness when ball bearings would not fit dimensionally in precision bores nor precision shafts.
