Having worked in heavy industry (Hyster Corp), I know we did strain gage testing of framework all the time. Tens of thousands of man hours proving what type, how long, which side, and where a weld should be before committing to production.

I really wonder if Fleetwood did that kind of testing? And if they did, did they prove that setup was within tolerances for strength?

Interesting...

Anybody's guess. I have done a little testing on some of the gluing techniques they used on this coach, which I plan on posting the results later.

Let's just say, I was surprised.

As a previous poster mentioned there are ways to test the strength of different metals. One way is the strain gauge.

Another, and certainly not the best way, is just to step onto it and see what happens.

Ok. More scraping done. This time we have the passenger side wall done. Probably about 8 hours or so scraping this one.

Areas where there was no water leakage, the plywood and glue were still in great shape. Even after 34 years. Arms got a good workout.

Not including the aluminum testing..... human 2...motor home 0.

If you include the testing.... human 2...motor home 1.

Started to look into some water damage in the kitchen of our 83 Pace Arrow. The more I looked, the more I found. I have some pics of the damage so far. Anyone interested in following a rebuild thread?

Any idea of how much you'll have invested in this project.
I always liked this sort of thing with old cars and have had a couple, but not so much with RV's. Still very interesting and do realize that the project is not meant to be cost effective.

At this point, not a clue. Originally I thought I would be replacing a couple of sheets of paneling, maybe a little insulation, and a sheet or two of plywood for flooring.

WOW! Wake up call....... Lol.

So far the only thing I have bought is the 1 1/2" square tubing for about $43.00. That is about to change. Probably, if I tried to calculate the cost for the entire job, I would run this thing into a quarry, and run for the hills...

I do intend to keep track of expenses, and will be posting that as I go along. The good thing about this is, I don't need the money all at once, so a little here, a little there, and it doesn't seem as bad, although, it could end up worse than just replacing the motor home.

Of course, I'll know what I have when I am done, and do plan to customize plenty of this as it goes back together.

My '94 Fleetwood Bounder had one of those in the floor storage boxes right between the driver and passenger. There was an obvious seam in the carpet, along with an obvious push-rotate-pull handle flush with the floor. In 12 years of crossing the Canadian and Mexican borders, no border guard ever noticed it. And neither did the American border guards when I'd return to the US.

I always thought I could fill it with contraband if I ever went broke but still wanted to travel. Hehe.

Also, I could have fit a DIY freezer in there. As it was, I used it to store all my electronic parts in multi draw cabinets.

But they can find a guy hiding inside the dash of a car, or inside a seat. Lol.
