Meanwhile, further proof of the meaningless nature of a win at Daytona. Austin Dillon last week's wundrkind of the 500 qualified where he often does, mid- pack for Atlanta. that was quick 15 minutes...

You do understand that the automobiles sold to the public today are completely unsuitable for conversion to race cars. Uni-body cars do not have a solid frame necessary for mounting a roll cage. The only ‘manufacturer’ parts on a safe race car are body panels. The suspension and ‘handling’ parts won’t stand up to racing demands. Now for the rest of your suggestions, most of us have access to that type racing at local short tracks. Not much better than a Saturday night at a 1/4 mile track with three or four classes of cars. 15-20 lap feature races, drivers you can actually talk to in the pits after the races. Because the models of NASCAR stock cars are selected JOINTLY by NASCAR AND the manufacturer. It's got to be profitable for both. |

I was at a softball game yesterday and a lady behind me commented on my new Jimmy Johnson hat.. she mentioned he had a tough week last week... also she was at the race... it was her families first trip to Daytona and they loved it and were planning on attending again next year... I think if your a true race fan, your not going to get too bored of the parade.. but if your a casual fan then you might... Personally, i would rather be at the track or a ball park (baseball) than almost any place in the world but some would be bored stiff at either.... |

Yeah, purses may drop, team costs may drop, salaries may drop and hopefully, ticket prices will drop. Today's fans have the attention span of 5 year olds. 4 hour races with 450mi of parading around does not cut it any more. I do like the idea of shortening the races but i don't think i would like to shorten enough to allow 2 different races during the same 3 or 4 hour race time... endurance is one of the factors in NASCAR, not just driver endurance but car/motor endurance as well... 3-400 mile races definitely but not 100 lap shootouts... |

Personally, i like the fact that the field is more open in the 500 than other tracks. Its nice to have a unlikely winner ever so often which still doesn't happen often. Besides, Austin was not an unlikely winner of the 500.. Childress, although not as competitive as Hendrick or Gibbs still is one of the top 5 teams in NASCAR... so Austin winning was not a shock... I'm not sure where he qualified for Atlanta has much to do with where he will finish... at least give him the benefit of the doubt If he gets top 10, that would be a nice follow up to the 500 win... but even if not, don't bury him before he's consistently OUT of the top 10..... |

Currently there are only 8 races on the schedule 500 miles or longer - 2 at Talladega, 2 at Texas, 1 each at Daytona, Atlanta, Charlotte and Darlington. The shortest race on the schedule is Watkins Glen at 220.5 miles, Sonoma - 224 miles, Martinsville is 263 miles, and Bristol is 266.5 miles - but all six of those are long races time wise There are 16 races at about 400 miles, and six in the 300-312 miles range. I’ll research some and let you know how long the races were time wise last year. |
