No, they don't really need 40 cars but with the cautions for stage racing and the multiple overtime laps, they may be needed for some semblance of a finish. Also, bigger than that, is in the TV contracts with Fox and NBC, FRANCECAR must provide a starting field of 40 or money is docked from the contract. I can see back several years ago, when there was a field shortage, calls from HQ were made and some owners would load an extra car to bring to the track and was paid by FRANCECAR to do so happening again.

That was old man Bill Jr who guaranteed money for extra cars to fil the field.

And it continues. I wonder why 60+ year old part time racer / nearly retired pilot Mark Thompson has suddenly decided to run some cup races after over 20 years of ARCA super speedway racing for the most part.

He takes care of his business first and foremost. His racing is an expensive hobby. Certainly doesn’t have the team or employees to compete fully in ARCA, much less his few NASCAR starts.

Who was it that said if you want to make a little money auto racing, you have to spend A LOT of money auto racing????

part of the problem is the "charter teams"
not only are these charter teams guaranteed to start the race, regardless of how poor qualify
which leaves the none charter teams fighting for a just a couple of left over starting spots

not to mention that the charter teams get a bigger paycheck at the end of the race as compared to the non charter teams

so not only do the non charter teams that want to compete, have to fight for a starting spot, but they make a lot less money if they do make the race.

so from a financial stand point it doesnt make much sense for the non charter teams to try and qualify.

this is what they were talijg about on the NASCAR channel the other day on sirius.

bad business move in my opinion for NASCAR to go the whole charter route.
only the really big teams that are owned by the very rich owners are going to make any money regardless of how they qualify.

not ga good idea to have a non charter team out qualify a charter team and then not be allowed in the race and make less money if they finish better than a charter team.

ive seen the death of NASCAR coming for many years already, and we are watching them slowly die under their own decisions.

When that field goes thundering by all of this is forgotten. Did you see the look on Ms Theron's face after waving the green at Daytona? Watch the vid and tell me she wasn't loving it.

That is a very short-term thrill. I would like to have seen her after she watched the race. The three-hour parade has a tendency to get a little boring after the first 10 to 15 laps. Seems like a lot of people do a post-mortem when it's all said and done and wonder if it is worth coming back for another.

Still campin' after all these years!

The thundering field is a rush, so is getting sand blasted, the odor of hot lubricant, and the ground literally shaking as the field rushes by and your seat is close to the fence. The racing might stink, but that experience is one of a kind, every 50 seconds during a race at Daytona.

I'm sure that NASCAR is making money, as are the top 10 drivers. All you guys are speculating on is how many more years it'll last. I get a kick out of how many think there's a solution to the problem. Obviously, all this is part of the entertainment....[emoticon]

Oh I think there is a solution. A much scaled back NASCAR.....

Much shorter races, Multiple series running on race day.

SATURDAY Race Day instead of Sunday.

Less restrictive design rules, but still focus on maintaining driver safety (this is a tough one). Letting the manufacturers fight it out for fastest and best handling cars.

Yeah, purses may drop, team costs may drop, salaries may drop and hopefully, ticket prices will drop.

Today's fans have the attention span of 5 year olds. 4 hour races with 450mi of parading around does not cut it any more.

It does not matter how many solutions are submitted. Fans have been trying this for 55+ years, and nobody has convinced the sanctioning body, nor the racetracks. We're good at finding fault with everything, it's the history of mankind.

GO KYLE BUSCH!
