Speaking of Dale.
Who will be most popular driver this year.
Will the 88 get the votes.
Or, will they go with the 3.
Or, will it be someone else.

I was a Dale Earnhardt fan and then a Dale Jr fan but for 2018 I am a Darrell "Bubba" Wallace Jr. 43 fan !

Hopefully Bubba Wallace's performance at Speed Weeks will translate to sponsorship dollars. I read he is unsponsored for half the races this season. Plate race sure, but I think he's got the talent to hang with the big boys if Petty can back it up with good cars. He didn't flinch in the drag race to the line with Hamlin.

They just got Smithfield for (i think) 6 races to settle the contract that Petty had left with them. Plus sponsorship for Atlanta from the Nascar Expierience. So that's 7 more races than they had before Sunday.

Maybe they might get Dominos Pizza for some races.

I think Bubba has a chance to grab a good chunk of Jr's fans.. i certainly would jump on the bubba bandwagon, but he's gotta compete/win... and soon or folks will forget about him quick...

If trailer merchandise is any indication it will be Chase... his trailer was twice as busy as any of the others... Jr typically had 2 trailers at each race and since he wasn't there, it appeared Chase was getting all the buyers... Jimmy was a (not so close) 2nd. Seems like last year there were no trailers, just shops and pay at one location.. much easier but this year, at least for Daytona and at least for a few drivers, the trailers are back... [emoticon]

Agreed! Chase's trailer had 12-15 lines 20 deep or so while the 48 trailer right next door had maybe 8 lines 10 deep. Admittedly the 48 has been around for a while and his fans have had plenty of time to buy merch. You certainly can't doubt ole Gramps, he's still got the fire but the young guns showed their stuff pretty well.

Personally I've always loved folks like Wendell Scott (before the good Richard Pryor movie) and J.D. McDuffie - hard working guys who ran a one car team because is was a decent way to make a living. (Those days are long gone.)

Re: 'Decline of NASCAR based on Daytona 500'

Frankly I enjoyed the 500 even though my driver lost his chance to win.

But if you want to look at something that shows NASCAR is in trouble - look at the entry list for the Atlanta race this Sunday - only 36 cars.

I suspect this years most popular driver will be Chase, as others have said. Harvick pretty much anointed Elliot as the next most popular driver during his interview last weekend. I think it would be great to see Bubba win it as well.

I don't really have a problem with what Austin did to win the race. I'm not sure it's fair to expect these guys to play nice-nice in the final laps of a race these days, especially a super speedway race with all kinds of aero stuff going on and split second decision making required. I know it's distasteful but nascar long ago jumped the shark in regards to being fair 'gentlemanly' racing. Many Fans expect to see contact, and a lot of it. When you have an environment like that, it can be a fine line between 'hard racing' and 'wreck em racing'.

That said, the end-zone celebration, slide in the grass thing that Dillon does is ridiculous.

I'll bet a cold beverage that it will be Chase Elliott.

The media seems to have anointed him as the Heir Apparent of the old NASCAR driver's.

They did the same thing to Dale Jr.

Re Austin and Aric

I think they have the potential to get to the front at Talladega and Daytona. Just have to avoid the big wrecks.

While I don't think Austin consciously decided this is the time to push him out of the way, I also do understand the culture.

Be it Talladega or Martinsville - if Aric is on his rear bumper, he isn't going to hesitate.

Wife will like that.
She picked Chase as her driver this year.

No RV at the moment.
Looking to hit the road in a year or two.

Davey Allison was my guy way back when. Then he got killed.
Didn't have a driver after that until, before the 2001 season, thought I'm going to root for Earnhardt this year.
