Topic: Nascar Follies

Didn't get to watch today. Was crossing Stevens Pass on US-2 east of Seattle during most of the race. The little I could hear on SirusXM sounded interesting. The mountains and trees block the signal.

I love the road courses mainly because they allow different pit strategies to work.

It was a good race only one caution besides stage cautions. Don't you just know that left front runners hangin' by their fuel tanks. The 78 was good to the last drop.

Another discussion going here....food for thought.
But, I think that the, "peanut gallery," is exactly who Nascar ownership should be listening to....the peanut gallery are the butts in the seats, at the track and at home.

It doesn't work, and it can't work. It's a "floodgate" that needs to remain closed. There's too many suggestions, most of which are shot from the hip, without sufficient knowledge of the business side of racing. It should go without saying that if you listen to one, you have to listen to all. Obviously, you have to reject most of them. THEN, what follows is that you end up with a large number of fans with "hurt feelings". Trust me, "hell has no fury, like......".
IMO you can't change human nature. Consequently, there's no need to focus on the underbelly of it. That's why I prefer to just look for the entertainment of the racing (sometimes there is some).

You make a good argument, Willie. I guess maybe I should just buy the company or start my own stock car racing franchise......then I can be the boss and call the shots.....[emoticon]

In the mean time, I'll just keep watching.

I have to agree with Cloud Dancer about the peanut gallery.

I've worked running a couple short tracks. The three worst groups with ideas how to make racing better are (1) owners and drivers; (2) fans; (3) the racing industry - the folks who sell tires, fuel, parts, engines, etc.

Car owners and drivers always want something that gives them an edge. That don't want competitive racing, they want to start at the front, and not have anyone able to pass them.

Fans want simple to follow exciting racing. On short tracks that means setting the field so that the best drivers start about the middle of the pack and have to pass several cars to get to the front. That's too complicated for them to follow, and of course they have a favorite that they want to have an advantage.

The 'racing industry' simply wants to get more of the driver/ owner money. I've seen too many racers spend so much money on special equipment, that they don't have enough money left to actually race.

Now once in a while, maybe twice a year, we might hear something interesting that was worth further investigation. Didn't always work out, but we did have to be open to new ideas.

My list of ideas recently where things I think might give some of the folks on this thread something of what they seem to want. Not that I expected NASCAR to adopt any of them.

That's always a good business plan to not listen to your customers! Of course NASCAR is reading and listening to everything spoken or written about their business. They would be idiots not to. I'm pretty sure they have a whole department that does only that.
Compare it to the CA gold rush. Did every dirt clod have a nugget in it?

Kasey Kahne, now a free agent! Will of course finish 2017 for Hendrick. How many "free agents" are already available and how many sponsors are sitting out there waiting to jump on board? Somebody needs to do the math.

I've been expecting Matt Kenseth to go to Hendrick and the #5.

Kahne could end up at RCR, or he could be on a minor team. I'm expecting Kurt Busch to have to take a pay cut if he can't drum up some sponsorship for himself.

The #77 for Kahne or Kurt Busch is a option depending of the ability to obtain a sponsor.

EXACTLY!!!!! The "peanut gallery" does pay the bills after all. To ignore input from the fan-base because you own the business is a recipe for failure. If you want to get more fans in the standa, give them what they want. Not a whole lot more complicated then that!

Green White Checkers was a product of fan and competitor demand. One could argue NASCAR fumbled the execution, so they're not completely tone deaf.
