Topic: Nascar Follies

Posted By: Cloud Dancer on 07/05/18 07:37pm

Regardless of what opinions we offer I will repeat what I've been saying....::: There is no practical solution to the problem that NASCAR has regarding the fact that most of their racing shows are lacking the quality and the type of racing that we like to see. BUT, I'm NOT willing to spend the money and the effort to travel to where I can see good racing. I simply settle with what I can conveniently watch on TV.

GO KYLE BUSCH...!!

One way to slow the cars is to limit the design. The easiest would be to change the cars from a small V-8 to a V-6 or in-line 4 cylinder engine. Past experience with V-6 engines showed the speeds don’t really decrease. Changing engines would be incredibly expensive. Big dollar teams will put millions into engine design efforts. Small teams will have to leave the sport.

Yup. For this weekend's race, NASCAR decreased the orifice size on the restrictor plates and raised the height on the end portions of the rear spoiler. And still, a number of cars turned 200 mph lap speeds running in packs during the first practice.

How about if we look at the science of it...? No, that's too complicated. OK, let's look at the history of it.
You restrict the air intake some more and give the car a little more traction,..AND THEN you put them on a big high-banked super speedway (like Daytona). Two or three Shinkansen Bullet Trains running side-by-side for a few hours,...THAT'S what comes to my mind.

But, thought NASCAR reducing the plate orifice diameter is supposed to reduce horsepower yet the well funded teams are still going like bats out of hell. The rear spoiler has been tinkered with since the dawn of the taxicab of tomorrow. The engineers and crew chiefs that good or NASCAR don't know what they don't know?

IMO it doesn't really matter. The Daytona racetrack will never produce good racing. For good racing to occur the track has to be much smaller. A ONE mile, well proportioned, racetrack would be ideal for this type of racecar. However, they're not about to shut down this facility (they've invested too much to upgrade it). We're stuck with trying to enjoy the spectacle of it. The good thing is that, for me, it's affordable and convenient (on TV). I'll be checking to see if Kyle Busch "get's lucky",....again.

Don't think KB was lucky on the last lap in Chicago. KB and Kyle Larson I believe are two of the best wheelmen competing in NASCAR right now, especially wheeling an out of shape/out of control car. They went mano y mano on the last lap and KB came out on top. That post race photo with the story on ESPN website says it all. Smile and a handshake, they both loved it with no regrets.

What caused the "Big One" which collected seventeen (17) racecars in the Xfinity race?
IMO,...::: for starters, it's the track design, the banking is 31 degrees and the length of the track is 2-1/2 miles

Yeah that pesky old gravity when the bumper cars begin in the turns. What's old Jaws Waltrip say about Daytona and Talledega.... they're both 'self cleaning' tracks!

Just think - - Someone like J.J. Yely could win this crash test
