Jat4,
Keeping a truck 10+ years, a diesel isn’t going to give you a big advantage with resale. The Ford or GM 350/3500 with a gas engine will do everything you want to do with a Northstar 950sc on the back. Good luck.

I respectfully disagree as I just traded in a 10 yr old Diesel. They gave me 30k with almost 100k on it. A similar hemi truck was worth $12k..

As to the OP, the Ford XLT I bought was the same price as a similar Ram, Ford offered more options and the diesel option was cheaper, over 11k for the Cummins and that aisin trans was another 2500k, Ford gives you the diesel for $8900..

No brand war, Ford is all new and Ram is a 2010 design.

I finally did locate a comparable Ford (gasser still) which I'm going to take a look at today, and you're right, the price is right around where the Dodge is. My diesel isn't worth quite as much as yours, but I'm hoping for a trade value of $16-17k, the Dodge dealer offered $16k so far.

How many miles on your truck? That trade offer seems really low unless you have 200k+ miles...

If it’s your location it might be worth a few calls to som of the larger dealers like Dave Smith if they offer you more for your truck.

My truck just turned 150k miles. The NADA guide online (consumer version obviously) lists a range of $19k for "rough" trade-in value to $21k for "clean" value; Kelly Blue Book lists $14k to $18 for "good" condition, $12k to $15 for "fair." Some of the dealer trade-in calculators have been sort of $14k-ish to $17k-ish. So $16,000 seems about right given the condition (somewhere between average and good). The Ford dealer I visited today offered $15k for trade.

I see. In our region your truck would be a $25k truck if it wasn’t rusted out or beat hard, 5.9 Cummins in a megacab is a rare beast, they only made the 1.5 years. But each coast is different unfortunately. Best of luck!

I’d love to see the spec sheet to get over 400+ up at the crank without fueling and timing mods...having owned a modded 7.3 I know why it takes to get to those power levels and it’s not cheap, easy or even possible without it being tuned for the huge injectors, HPOP, larger turbo, studs, girdle, etc.

Again would love to see the build sheet. My deleted and modded 6.7 Cummins put down 495 horses at the wheels and that was maxed out on fuel, boost and my cp3 was being drained...ie, a dyno wonder without being sustained on the street in any real world use.

Thread hijack over, sorry OP!

In closing, I didn't build it. It was done by Ford SVO in Dearborn in 98. I was told to take good care of it and keep an eye on the pyrometer, which, I do. It is a bit hard on U joints and carrier bearings however. Other than that, it runs like a top. 5K oil changes and yearly transmission fluid changes with filters.... and of course Archoil in every oil change.

No build sheet ever came with it and it's never been apart, barring a new water pump.

Being 68, I'm not a hot rodder anyway.

However, I'd still buy a gas engine over any diesel today.

thanks, actually in our area there are a handful of '06 megacabs for sale and $25k is the going full retail price. Those trucks are completely cleaned up and honestly are in better shape than mine is currently. It will be interesting to see which dents and dings the dealer chooses to hammer out.

I should also say that I went and looked at a totally stripped down F350 yesterday (XL trim), and after they worked their best numbers it still ended up coming out $3k higher than the Dodge gasser I'm considering which has considerably more options included. So I'm still thinking that a Ford to Dodge apples to apples comparison will end up with Ford being $4-5k higher. I asked the sales mgr yesterday why that is, and he just sort of shrugged and said "maybe lower quality?" before adding "we'll never be able to beat a Dodge price." With the diesels obviously the Cummins commands a premium at $11k-ish plus the $2k Aisin tranny upgrade whereas the Ford diesel is $8-ish, so that makes the diesels closer to comparable in price.

Gotta. Hope they treat you right, sounds like you know the market there well enough to not give away your truck.

Ram may be offering higher incentives as well. They are pushing an older model where as Ford is new this year so sales are stronger.

But you may be spot on as I only looked at diesels so the price gap might be the higher cost. Best of luck and not knocking the Ram at all, I had very little issues with mine which was a third gen and considered “lower” quality compared to the 4th gen trucks selling now. Be sure your looking at 6.4 Hemis too, might as well have the most you can get if your taking the mileage hit!

I would have preferred a DT466 but it wasn't available and probably wouldn't fit under the hood anyway.

It can be done, but they're so heavy you need the suspension out of an F550 to keep the front bumper from dragging.

There was an OBS F-SuperDuty at a truck show a few years back with a DT466 stuffed in it. Can't find the pictures. It was definitely a crowbar job. I think they had to put in a body lift so they could mount the engine high enough that the oil pan didn't drag on the ground. It was 2WD, solid front axle, and LOTS of extra leaves in the springs.

Putting 10-ply tires on half ton trucks since aught-four.

My renter had a 6.4 Hemi (I think) that developed a rod knock so he got another bigger one (6.7) in a 2500 series RAM 4x4. Why I know the rear suspension is coils, I looked it over when he brought it home. He told me the gas mileage sucks. Not an issue so long as fuel prices stay reasonable. If gas goes to 4 bucks again, that could be a big issue.

I don't drive my OBS daily. I have a Ford Focus hatch with a 5 speed that gets between 39.5 and 40 consistently. Gets filled once a month, maybe.

Truck is a truck to me, so long as the suspension and underpinnings are up to the intended use. Just not a fan of coil springs, especially out back, where the load is.

Coils ride better, more 'car like' but it's a truck, not a Buick.

Yeah pop for a 3500 at least and avoid the coils.

Posted By: SidecarFlip on 10/18/17 09:45am

Big issue I have with coils (other than they aren't truck load friendly) is all the control arms and bushings under there that will eventually fail. I counted 4 control arms (8 bushings) on the 2500 and of course, none are greasable. Leaf packs have 4 pivot points total and no control arms needed.

Pulled the trigger on the new Dodge today--this is it. 2018 model, 4wd, 6.4L Hemi, crew cab long box. A decent number of optional features as well.

And have my wife accompanying me to New Hampshire this weekend to go camper shopping. Wish us luck.

p.s. I just want to add my thanks to everyone who has participated in this thread, you all have really helped me think through the process and zero in on what I am really looking for, both truck-wise and camper-wise. so thanks again.
