I tell them for a car it's pretty bad, but for a house it's pretty good. And leave it at that.

Six mg is about what we get towing at usually 70 mph and the traffic , and mtn,and slow speeds around cities. Running 62 mph, we can get a bit, over 7mpg.
On flat, midwest, we show as high as 8.6 mpg, at 62 mph and on cruise, unless there is traffic to muck it up.

I had some flake of a woman who really wanted to create a scene at a gas station, over this topic. She started by standing at her pump, shrieking "sir, sir" repeatedly, from fifty feet away. As I asked her if she was talking to me, she shouted, "how much gas does THAT use?" I answered, "about seven miles per gallon". She then let out a dramatic scream. It was over the top. I then asked how many MPGs HER house gets? She got defensive, and said, "well that ISN"T a HOUSE!". I replied, "Well, it has a bathroom, a kitchen, a bedroom, and I live in it, does that sound like a house to you?". She said, "well, I never though of it that way", got in her car, and took off.

What a fruit loop.

You must have run into one of my Facebook friends. She would have us all wiping our rears with leaves if she could.

I love the 'how much does your house get' response!!

I've used a variety of answers. One used most often is "about 40 MPG for each vehicle" - the coach, the Jeep, the two bicycles, and the kayak (8 mpg x 5).

I say if you can afford the luxury of a motorhome, don't worry about gas mileage.

This is what he meant by "anger."
Yes, exactly. These are often the types of comments anyone will get when posting about fuel economy. I truly don't understand why we get so many of these when this subject comes up.

Can't someone be genuinely interested in fuel economy, efficiencies saving money or budgeting without being "worried" about it? Believe it or not, some people are intellectually curious and like to understand the world. It's not that they are worried or can't afford fuel.

Comments that dismiss the question are conversation killers. They don't add much to our collective wisdom.

I have to agree with you on this one. Most people who ask are simply trying to satisfy their curiosity. Yes, you might sometimes encounter a "greenie" who will want to turn it on you somehow, but the fact is, almost everyone you encounter is simply wondering what it does in comparison to what they have. Sad part is, most people nowdays, have no real idea what their vehicle get for mpg, and would not know how to figure it out if they even wanted to.

I started tracking MPG in 2011 when I bought a car that was difficult to consistently fill, and the MPG variations fluctuated wildly. I took all of the receipts since I bought it (from my shoe box filing system) and as they had odo readings written on them, I started a spreadsheet. Now the spreadsheet has tabs for not only the car, but also the old Ranger, and the motor home too. I can pinpoint the switch from summer to winter fuel, and back, by the changes in mpg, and can tell you what brands do best and worst.

I am doing a pretty consistent mid 17 mpg on the Sprinter based MH I have, over the couple of thousand miles I have driven it.
