Welcome to Arizona David. Your having quite the experience and have found out how bad the roads can be in California especially 99. Wait until you hit Louisiana.

Yeah, CA-99 was bad!!! 58 was pretty good today though. Went over some mountains on I-40 today that topped out at around 7,335 feet. MPG was around 6.3 on that stretch, but we had a stretch on Thursday that we got 9.3. Yeah, 9.3! We have NEVER gotten above 8 towing. Must have been going downhill with a stiff tail wind. Averaging 7.8 mpg on the trip so far, and that's pretty good in my opinion.
At Holbrook AZ KOA now. Lots better than Barstow, and not next to the freeway. Off to KOA of Tucumcari NM tomorrow.
I kinda goofed on the route planning. Didn't know we would be so close to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Otherwise would have spent a day in Williams. Oh well, we were at the north rim a few years ago. We'll get back here again someday.

David, we tell people that if you can get thru Louisiana without any damage from their terrible roads then you can drive to Alaska no problem.

I've heard that the Al-Can highway is pretty bad, but I hadn't heard about Louisiana. I think we'll be on I-20 at that point. I'll let you know how we did on Tuesday.

Just did that route on 99 and 58 several days ago. As Bob said, good luck in Louisiana!! At least you haven't run into wind so far.
Got the rig unloaded and put into the storage lot down here. Mid to upper 80's, may hit 90 - 91 Wed. & Thurs. LOVE IT!!

We have found that 99 is a better road than I5 between Sacramento and the Grape Vine so I'm a little surprised by these reports that 99 is really a bad road. The outer lane concrete on I5 is breaking down on the last few feet on the right and really beats up a RV. Yes, there a are a few rough spots on 99 but not the continuous roughness of I5 on the outer lane.

IMHO.. The stretch of I-80 leaving S.F. is about the worst I've been on or mebbee from the intersection of I-86/I-84 westbound to almost Twinfalls. I don't know which stretch did it but one of them broke the spring on the Cougar TT.
The problem that I have with I-5 in Ca,is where you go under an overpass and go from asphaly to concrete and back and the asphalt is breaking away.
Yes,the stretch south of Stockton is a real bear in places.
We looked at French Camp once and decided not to stay there for those reasons. I think the RV park at Dunnigan was better. We usually spend the little extra and stay at Riverpoint when visiting Jeanne's MIL relatives there. She's moved to Vegas now,so we stay at the Oasis there.

Left Holbrook AZ KOA early yesterday and it was about 30 degrees out. I-40 in NM was the best road so far, at least until you came to EVERY overpass! Seem that they don't know how to do a smooth transition from asphalt to concrete. ![[emoticon]](http://www.coastresorts.com/sharedcontent/cfb/images/eek.gif "eek") Stopped at a few rest areas and man was it windy! No wonder we've been getting great gas mileage with probably a 10-20mph tail wind.
Tucumcari KOA was pretty nice. Not too close to the freeway, but you could still hear it, And the train whistles were a bit farther out in the distance. Had a really great breakfast before leaving. Same wind in TX as in NM. Hwy 287 from I-40 down towards Fort Worth is a good road. At Northlake Village RV Park near Roanoke TX. Looks like a nice park (in the dark). ![[emoticon]](http://www.coastresorts.com/sharedcontent/cfb/images/smile.gif "smile") , but a little tricky to find. It's away from the highway, but on the flight path to some airport. I think it's DFW. Got a gravel site right by the office. It's not level.
Tomorrow, the rest of TX, through LA and into MS.

Ron/Bob,
You guys were right Louisiana roads are worse than California, but just the concrete parts. The asphalt sections (90%) are fine. Somewhere along the way today the road was so rough, the vertical blinds in our back window broke off from the overhead cabinenit. But they weren't put on real great either...8 wood screws that are too long along the 8' blind screwed into the thin wood paneling underneath the cabinet. There should be a 1"x2" or something behind it, but there isn't.
Arrived at River Town Campground in Mississippi in the dark, so can't really say if the park looks nice or not, but we found it a lot easier than the one last night. Off to Bonifay FL tomorrow, hoping Mississippi roads are better. ;B
