69 Avion wrote: ![]() I just had my horizontal tanks from my 1969 Avion recertified today. They are actually ASME tanks, not DOT tanks and the horizontal tanks don't need the OPV valve. I repainted these tanks and then I had them tested and topped off. They have had propane in them for about 30 years without being used. The gas company was surpried at how they look new. ![]() ![]() Interesting that the gas company would put a DOT recertification label on an ASME tank . To the best of my knowledge older ASME tanks do not require recertification or OPD valves . Did they offer an explanation ? '68 Avion C-11 '02 GMC DRW D/A flatbed |

The stickers are on there for me so that when I go to a retailer they will fill the tanks without an argument. My supplier is a wholesaler that deals with these issues on a regular basis. Their concern was for me trying to fill my tanks when I am out camping. An ASME tank or a horizontal DOT tank like this shouldn't need an Overflow Protection Device (valve) but some retailers don't know that. With a DOT inspection tag, they won't argue that the ASME tank wasn't inspected, because they don't know the difference between an ASME tank and a DOT tank. |

Picture of tanks with quick disconnect fittings for external LP supply. I had to build a new mount for the Rego Regulator since the factory mount set it out from the back of the cabinet by about 1". This wouldn't allow for the tanks to fit all the way in. All I used was a piece of 1-1/2" x 1/8" plate to make the mount.![]() Gas discharge hose with "dead man" switch. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The gasoline hose is stored in a 50 cal ammo can. |

Welcome back Chris! We're also rolling along again. Its all interior work so its tedious, but steady. I'll post photos of the progress in the next week or so. In the meantime, I ran across this in the Airstream Forum. No info one where the picture was made or who the owner is. Now, this is an Avion Truck Camper on steroids.![]() ![]() |

I wonder why it is riding so low in the rear? It certainly is strong enough. Notice the single tires. By the way, I think that qualifies as a Motorhome. |

Back to Work So, after a month off of working on the camper and with the temperature starting to become reasonable again, we got back to it. When I first bought this camper it had several large dents in the upper rear lapstrake panels that I was able to remove. However, after we deanodized and polished the camper I realized that the panels were a little dinged up and ugly as polished pieces. They looked great anodized but polished, not so much. I talked with the Cayo guys about making me some new panels and I am still waiting on an outcome there. In the mean time I thought I would try some patches and see how they look. On the left side there was only one panel with damage but on the right there were three. I plan on doing three patches on each side to make it symmetrical. We’ll see how it comes out. Today I did four of the six patches and got them ready install. this week I will finish them up. Other than that, we worked on finishing the first rough polish. There were a couple areas on the left side that needed some more work and others, like the fridge chimney and chimney hat that had not been done at all. After today it is almost done. In a couple more weeks of work we will be on to the interior! I can’t wait for a change of scenery! See you next week! The Polishing Bandit strikes again! ![]() Here's one of the wavy panels I am trying to fix. ![]() A curvy patch ![]() ![]() Clekoed in place ![]() This side has 3 panels that need work ![]() One of the last anodized pieces, the Chimney Hat ![]() Well, two patches don't look that bad. I'll keep going. ![]() Maybe this will work out. ![]() ![]() Chimney Hat deanoodized and ready to polish. ![]() Happy Camping! Avioncamper.wordpress.com ![]() |

Chris, it is good to see you back at it. I think the patches look great because they were done in a very professional manner and they are symetrical. Keep up the good work.
