Howdy!
I feel your pain! Tiki you must give us
all the gory details how this happen.
I must say you know how to pick up a fumble.
That work is drop down gorgeous. I especially
like your reuse of materials. (I personally think
it looks better than it did, its got more character).

I agree! That turned out GREAT!!! After seeing your interior trick with the aluminum, I think I will need to see if I can do something similar in my closet. As some of you may remember, the PO had cut out and thrown away the rear fiberglass cap on the drivers rear corner. He beat out the dented exterior and resealed the shell. I re-insulated, and then built the closet which hides the ugliness, but I would like to finish it properly...

Are the new panels from Cayo clear coated? Painted? Anodized? Not that I plan to get any right now, just for future reference.

Thanks!
Garry

Ticki,

What a terrific job! Well described and classic. It comes at a perfect time for me. As I'm sure you recall, we managed to back into a protruding balcony on our last day on the road this past Spring. It was so disturbing....like wounding a pet.

Luckily I was able to put it into perspective or my whole Spring experience traveling all over the country was turning very dark, indeed. Since then, we have been catching up with everything we should have done this Spring and early summer...building an addition to our house...and Jane is running for Mayor. Just stuff on every front to work on.

I ordered the panels from Chuck Cayo quite a while ago, and they just turned up last week. Best timing, like I said, cause we can work on them Thursday and Friday while the electricians take over my housing project.

We replaced 3 in the front several years ago, sort of near where you had to replace. But it was nowhere as damaged. So, we have our panels (though one is a little dinged and needing a careful straightening).

Here they are lined up in my garden. Ready for restoration. Garry they are anodized but very bright.

Thank you all for the compliments . As in any project there are compromises ,and as most of you know , the decisions and indecisions are sometimes the most agonizing part .

Garry , I was told by Chuck Cayo that the panels are e-coated paint and not anodized . If I had known beforehand I would have asked if he could use mill finish aluminum . I think with an acid treatment they would come closer in appearance to old anodized panels .

I haven't taken the protective film off yet, but I sure thought they were anodized. Sorry for the bad info. What is "e-coated"?

All I know is what I've read , here's one.

Hmmm. E-coat is not what I had in mind, but I didn't bother to ask. With all our repairs, the old girls will have an interesting look;-)

The work begins.

Its a nice cool, dry day here in Carbondale. My current building project has electricians swarming all over it, so we have decided to repair the camper. Here you'll see that the vent was damaged and a hole was punched into the center rear panel. In addition, we have the epoxy material that was placed on the roof for insulation and heat reduction. Everything has to be scraped out of the way before we can remove the rivets.

We're using Ticki's ideas in taping and incorporating cleco's in the process. The last time we did this we didn't utilize the cleco's because, well, I'm not the smartest guy in the room. As a result we had to remove the panels and replace them several times until we got it right.

This time we are doing it correctly. I hope.

I'll post later today.
