Topic: Avion truck campers - Hundreds of photos

Posted By: rfuerst911sc on 09/08/13 01:04pm

Today I installed a 1/4 " piece of plywood along with a 1/2 " laminated together and glued/nailed to a cleat that installs on the inside piece of ply that makes the vertical surface of the wing. After a copius amount of adhesive caulk, some PL200 and some stainless steel screws she is very solid. I still have another layup of 3/4 " to go but she's coming together. I can stand on what I have installed and it barely moves when I jump up and down on it. I'm getting closer to install the Stable Lift.

On the value issue:

I bought mine for $2000 and I will have $12-15k into it before its done. When its done it will be as good as any new truck camper, last much longer than a new one and look much better too. Add to that that you can't just go out and buy one off the shelf and that you'd have to look hard for a long time to find decent one. So, if someone really wanted a finished one done well it would really be a sellers market. With as much damn work as I have put into mine someone would have to cough up some serious dough to convince me to sell it.

The variable that will drive up the value of our Avions will be the demand. As more of these restorations get finished and the campers go out into the world and get seen the demand might rise. Or maybe there are only a few of us weirdos that like these things and that's all there will ever be. Who knows. [emoticon]

Happy Camping!

We have just returned home from our trip around Alaska. I can't count the number of times I was asked about the Avion. People still think it is a cut down Airstream...[emoticon]

I hope one day to find another C10, and go fully through it, getting rid of the wood tub, and doing an all aluminum tub with basement, tanks, etc. and then do an extended cabover... To get a N/S bed.... And hopefully do it all for approx. the same money you guys have been spending... $10,000-12,000.

But for now, our C10 will continue to do well.

It is too bad that Thor industries doesn't do that very thing. They now own Airstream and Camp lite. All they would have to do is to combine the technology of both builders into a really nice camper. I would be happy if they would sell the "shells" and let someone finish them.

Howdy y?all! I?ve admired your work from afar for years.
I have a C-10, the Cayo?s say is early 60? It was this group?s
work that got me into this. These really are just great campers.
Just want to say thanks.

Welcome cajunavion! It's good to see another C10 owner. As far as I've found C 10's were produced from 1965 to 1967. 1967 the C10's had vinyl coated aluminum interiors. 1965/66's had painted aluminum. The very early C10's had the clearance lights mounted low on the sides. They also have a smaller propane access door. Please post pictures of yours when you get a chance!

Garry, I'm pretty sure that my C10 is a 1967, and the OEM interior paint was Zolatone on aluminum. It would be embaressing if I got it wrong :-( Where did you run across that information about the 1967?

That was from back when I bought by C10. I called Mr. Cayo in Michigan, and that was what he told me was the differentiation in years for C-10's. It is possible that you have an early 67, since he said it was mid year 67 that they stopped painting, and went with the vinyl coated aluminum. He just couldn't remember if it was early mid year or late mid year...

Hope that this helps!

Howdy!
Has anyone replaced the center roof vent with a fantastic fan? My hole is 13.75, the fantastic fan needs 14 inches. I really dont want to rip out the present vent. Could I pull the guts out if the fan and use that? I dunno. My other option is to go with as is and repair the original Hehr fan in the loft. I really like the look of the vintage Hehr, but having a little air is kinda nice too!
