We're missing a cat. Bobbi went walkabout Monday night and we've not seen her since.

It's not unusual for a cat to be missing four or five days before strolling up all unconcerned, but she's too fearless for her own good. Her favorite prowling area is the hill immediately behind our property, which is also traversed regularly by a very large gray fox. With this drought, that fox may be having trouble finding enough food, and may have decided on cat meat. A gray fox can also climb trees, so unless Bobbi got higher in the tree than the fox can climb, and the fox isn't still sitting below her, we may be down to two cats. On the other hand, we've not seen fox scat in the yard for a long time, so even the fox may have fallen prey to something else.

Gonna be long hours the next few days, calling and calling, and waiting for her to show up. If not, then we'll start the lost cat search process, and see if any rescue has her but hasn't bothered to check for her chip (pretty common around here).

We know she's not run over, as she does fear vehicles and won't approach a road. She's not exactly fearful of strangers, but she's not terribly friendly to them, either, so if someone's been trespassing on our absent neighbor's property, they wouldn't necessarily be able to catch her. No one's been around to trap her in a building.

The main deer herd has treed Alex more than once, so I'm hoping that's what happened, and she'll be home as soon as the guard deer lose interest or get startled away. When Alex came home after five days last July, he was terribly thirsty and hungry and had evergreen sap on his stomach fur, but was otherwise undamaged. I truly hope that's what's going on with little Bobbi.

Please tell us that KITTY BOBBI has come home. None of like the thought of something happening to Bobbi.

Unfortunately, no sign of Bobbi. Neither of the two local shelters have received her. Monday we'll visit all the vets within a five mile radius and post flyers, and also at several local businesses.

We've watched the vultures as they cruise the air currents, but haven't seen them head down to dine in our immediate area.

I hate, hate, hate not knowing what's happened to one of my pets. We've not had a disappeared cat in 25 years, yet I still remember and wonder.

Meanwhile, Spot and Alex have decided on who sleeps in which RV chair, and they take turns sitting between our pillows to look out the window. I think they'll be going along on our next RV trip.

Spot knows the word "RV." I ask, "Do you want to go to the RV?" and off he goes.

I picked him up shortly after we got inside, and happened to be standing directly under a vent. He raised his head as high as he could to reach that cool air, and really didn't want me to put him down. If we had floor a/c vents in the RV or the S&B, he'd plant himself on one.

Alex, on the other hand, prefers lying on the upper kitchen cabinets in the house. He's old and slender, so the heat feels better to him. When it gets too hot, I carry him to the RV, and he accepts being in there (as long as at least one human stays).

About 0300 this morning, I made a pit stop in the house. For whatever reason, I went out the south door, around the side, and onto the north porch. I saw a black shape by the pool edge, and called out, "Bobbi? Bobbi?" The shape started skittering toward me.

Oops. Bobbi does NOT skitter - that's a skunk! I boogied back around the house and back inside, then grabbed a flashlight and pointed it out the windows to see if the skunk was still near the north porch. Nope. So I went out the north door and shined the light out into the meadow. Sure enough, there was the skunk skittering away.

Interesting, though, there wasn't any smell as it wandered about. Luckily, it did not feel the need to hike its tail.

WLToo wondered if this is Pepe LePeu, whose attentions caused Bobbi to split...

Got all the lost cat posters up, registered with the various lost pet web sites. Now we hope someone found her and will give her back.

My brother nicknamed Spot "Spotacus." I like it. Alex has a nickname (he was rather gaseous until we got his kitten system used to proper food), now Spot does.

Going into week three without air conditioning, as the daily highs top 100. Luckily, our humidity stays around 25-30%, so as long as there's a breeze, we can take it. Hope those parts come in soon, though.

Some emails giving advice (of the useless kind) and soliciting paid pet search sites came in, and one phone call, but the time line on that cat didn't match with Bobbi's disappearance.

Pepe Le Peu is still hanging about. Saw it in the neighbor's lower meadow last night. May have to do some varmint huntin' if it doesn't move on. With the birds eating every bug they find, I have my doubts Pepe's going to find much worth eating. I think its presence is why all the deer are avoiding our meadow now, and seem to be avoiding the neighbor's, too. I miss them.

Getting real hot now. Time to add Alex to the RV; Spot went over before lunch.

We have air conditioning again. Whew. Waited a couple hours for the house to cool to the same temperature as the RV, then brought Alex and Spot over. They've finished dinner and are laying on the still cooling tiles, but seem pretty happy.

When it cools a little more, I'll turn off the floor fan. Be nice to not have to listen to it anymore.

The big question now is whether or not Spot will join us on our bed in the house. He didn't join us on the RV bed last night, but it was pretty hot last night. He found a spot where the cool air blew on him and stayed. The cool air blows on his bed on the cat tree, but also on our bed, so we'll see.

Still no sign of Bobbi. Getting discouraged.
