Well, his chip is registered, and the photo was of him and a little girl. So I initiated a "found cat" notice, and five minutes later, they called. His name was Oliver, he lived with four dogs, and they were pretty desperate to get him back.

So Oliver will go home on Friday. Czarny will be most relieved...

Aww, that really stinks. But you did the right thing. How far from you does his other family live? Cat's don't usually venture that far from home.

Sorry that he has to go back. Hopefully, they will at least reimburse you for his surgery and care.

Hang in there,

You did the right thing to be sure. I'm sorry you won't get to keep him but I know the little girl will be overjoyed. 4 dogs would be a might bit much for any of ours.

Still hoping for a Rudy Return.

Seems the family lost interest when they found out the medical bills were huge and there will be more before Randolph is fully healthy again. Also, they were in violation of city ordnances requiring cats be on a leash when outside, so they were about to get a citation for that. Finally, they lost possession when Randolph was reported as a neighborhood stray back on 25 May.

It's a long, convoluted story, but the upshot is Randolph is ours now. He and Czarny go to the vet tomorrow; Randolph gets a followup visit and his last inoculation, and Czarny gets his annual exam and shots.

Stephany, his previous family lives about 45 minutes away from us. He was wandering around in my sister's neighborhood there.

Leoghaire and another doe were in the meadow this afternoon, with the other doe's fawn. At least one fawn survived this awful spring. Still no word from Texas Wildlife as to what killed Leoghaire's yearling.

It's still golden hour, so I'm going outside to admire the color. Later, y'all.

It’s worked out well for both of you. I’m glad Randolph is in a home away from dogs - probably why he wandered away to begin with. How’s Czarny taking the news?

Change 2: Seems the mom is a real ditz, but the dad called. He was being reasonable, asking if he could repay us in stages, because he really, really wanted his little girl to have her kitty back. He agreed to pay us back via PayPal, and we agreed to give the cat to them.

So last Wednesday, Oliver (his first name) went home. We handed Oliver straight into the little girl's hands, and he was content to be there. I sent them an invoice via PayPal, and if they start repaying us, great. If not, well, there's always small claims court. After the very sleezy way the ditzy mom tried to avoid repaying us for the not at all cheap medical care, I am very much not inclined to let it go.

Czarny, once he realized he was an only cat again, has blossomed back into the loving and playful cat he was before. So until a true miracle happens and Rudy finds his way home, Czarny's gonna be an only cat.

Today, it's way too hot for him outside, so he's ensconced in his favorite afternoon napping site: the spare bed. Me, I'm looking forward to about 1900 tonight, when the pool will be fully shaded. Be spending at least an hour in the pool. Ahhhh...

Later, y'all.

Sorry to read this. I’m sure the little girl is happy to get her Kitty back. But it doesn’t help your loss and love for the kitty.

Actually, we're okay. Oliver hadn't been with us long enough to have completely burrowed himself into our emotions. I'm far happier that Czarny is again the loving and happy boy he was.

Czarny's not terribly happy with us right now, though. I made him come back into the house early in the afternoon, before it hit 100. Didn't go below 100 again until sundown, so he had to stay inside. That will be the situation through Wednesday. I'm not taking any chances on Czarny getting heat stroke; if that means he's not happy at staying inside, we'll deal with it.

It's dark, it's hot, think we'll go back to the pool now. Later, y'all.

Well, Oliver's family's in a bind. Mom the Ditz went to the hospital in very serious condition. No idea if it's COVID-19 or not. Although they did receive and read the PayPal invoice, I highly doubt they'll have the funds to repay even a portion. They may also be having issues, as they have unfriended each other on Facebook....

Meanwhile, we've solved a big mystery. Couldn't figure out why the hummingbird feeder got drained each and every night. WLToo put up a game camera, and we immediately found the culprit:

Now we move the feeder indoors after dark, and put it back out first thing in the morning.

Czarny is back to normal. He does require a human to assist his nightly zooming now, so we get a bit of late night exercise just before we all crash. He's figured out the north door out to the deck is the safest route outside, as the barn swallows who are still feeding babies are on the south porch.

The north porch and deck are not totally safe, however. He spent most of yesterday inside, after watching a roadrunner on the deck railing, being bombarded by barn swallows. The roadrunner took it for a long time, then finally left. Czarny decided being inside was the better idea.

After no measurable rain since May, we finally got just enough today to settle the dust for a few hours. The temps also dropped into the 80s, but with Hurricane Hanna's humidity, it's not feeling much cooler than normal. We're not going to get much in the way of Hanna rain, but every little bit will help.

We'll be grilling pork tenderloin tomorrow, for the weekly gathering. No idea what else we're serving yet, so I should probably go rummage through the pantry. Later, y'all.
