The morning fog is so thick I can't see to the road. Seems the weather feels like me... When it's this humid, my sinuses clog up and I can't breathe lying down, so I've been up since 0400. Sure made Spotacus happy, though, as he could go outside in the very, very bright moonlight and sit in one of his overwatch positions. But now he's asleep on the porch glider - all is well in his kitty world.

We still have three hummingbirds. Just saw them doing the feeder dance.

Too foggy to see the deer. That's good, actually, because the poachers can't see them, either.

Time to brew some tea and wake up. Later, y'all.

I wonder if the poaching has increased since the hurricane because people lost so much of their freezer food?

Interesting thought, magnus, but I have my doubts. This area, a couple hundred miles from the Houston area, was not impacted by any power outages and the rainfall, while heavy, didn't flood much of anything, so we locals didn't lose anything.

If a Houston-area resident has a vacation home here and was negatively impacted at home, they're probably more likely to still be at home, dealing with the mess. We've not seen an increase in Houstonians coming to their vacation homes since the hurricane. While it is possible, I just don't think it's probable.

No, I think it more likely that the poachers are locals -- the villainous scum....

It's October and the swimming pool is still in the 80s, so Short Friend and I have been really enjoying swimming/floating/just messing around in the pool. But a cool front coming in tomorrow may end the swim season. Hope not, as it's going to warm back up the rest of the month. Some years I have been able to swim until mid-November - always hoping for that season.

Spotacus has been a very good boy for almost a week now. Something's gonna blow soon, I think...

WLToo had a colonoscopy today. No issues. Then we went to the Saltgrass Steak House and ate prime rib. It was very tender, but not particularly flavorful without the au jus. Guess we're just totally spoiled by the intense flavor and tenderness of the smoked meats we get at our local smokehouse restaurant.

Now we're both trying to stay awake (it was an 0430 wakeup for both of us) and not being particularly successful. Think I'll go float in the pool and drowse there.

Later, y'all.

Well, he is a cat...

Cool front came in early this morning, and the high only reached the mid-70s. Mom said the other folks in her Independent Living complex were wearing woolens and parkas. She still has her air conditioner set to 70.

We took L'Andante to have a couple things repaired, and to add Bilstein shocks. When we get her back, it'll be time for a short road trip. We still haven't seen the Marfa lights.

Short Friend heads to Maine Wednesday at noon. Tall Friend is staying home; he doesn't do cold anymore. SF will be back the first week of December.

Whoa, it's Wednesday already. Night, y'all.

It's good when we can hit the road and change our view for awhile. Will Spotacus ride shotgun?

Herself is wanting to go hunt fairy stones in VA and see the Shenandoah Valley in color. So we'll leave tomorrow and take a short trip over there.

Yes, Spotacus will ride shotgun -- from behind the sofa. He does occasionally look out the window, but prefers to just sleep the trip away. The worst part of sharing the RV with him is he's a bed hog. In the S&B, that's fine on the king bed. On a short queen, not so much...

A very nice looking 8-point buck joined the does at the feeder. We hope he gets a chance to breed some does before the poachers get him.

Last Saturday, we took Native Plants 101 from the Texas Native Plants Society. Goal is to develop a butterfly and hummingbird garden by the house, and get more deer appropriate vegetation in the meadow, using only native plants. Long term project, but we've finally started. We'll also get eventual certification as some sort of native plant guru.

Meanwhile, WLToo harvested a snootful of peppers. So I'm going to make a potato and pepper salad with white balsamic vinegar, spices and herbs, and olive oil. Recipe was in the paper and we all thought it sounded nice. And it's a great way to use up so many peppers.

Yesterday, he made a potato/pepper soup. It was great.

Good thing he picked when he did. He also unearthed over a dozen white grubs, each about ¾" in diameter and 3-5" long. Not positive what they are the larvae for, but we did NOT want them in the garden. So he tossed them all on the rock ledge in the sun, for whatever critter felt like eating them. I do know they were not butterfly larvae.

Winter garden is planted. Hope it takes. We're still getting the feel for a climate requiring two gardens in early spring and early autumn, and none in the summer. Getting better each time, and it's all been delicious.

Early day tomorrow. Later, y'all.

We're still working on recipes for all those peppers. Today was a potato-pepper salad. Pretty good, actually. Tomorrow is his turn....

Now that the air conditioner is off, Spotacus has figured out how to pull the screen door open, so he's wandering in and out at will. We just wish he'd close it behind him.

The buck is still hanging about the meadow. He's interested, but we haven't seen any of the does reciprocate yet. It's truce time when the feeder goes off, though.

The monarch butterflies are migrating through. We have a lot of frost weed, so they have something to eat. Haven't seen a single hummingbird for about a week, so I guess they've all migrated.

Tomorrow it's back to the vegetable garden. Found more of those grubs. Ewww.

Later, y'all.
