I thought it was roman numerals and I was being silly.
I never did like some of the newspaper fonts that used the same strike for upper case I and lower case l. Particularly since the age of typset has long passed into the sunset.
They seemed silliest when you got Chicago, lll instead of Chicago, Ill.
