All memories aren't good ones.

On this same corner was one of the worst fires ever in Charleston.

I listened to the reporters on the radio with mom... I can still hear the sirens and screams that the radio announcers microphones picked up. It made an impact on me, a nine year old grade school kid. it gave me nightmares.

A couple of years later I went to Methodist Church Camp with one of the firemens daughters... she was an orphan in our eyes... we never knew anyone with only one parent.

The Woolworth Fire, 1949

The Charleston Fire Department experienced its worst fire in city history and greatest tragedy on March 4th, losing seven brothers at the Woolworth Fire. While searching for the fire inside the Woolworth Building, the first floor gave way and collapsed, sending firefighters into the smoke and flames below. While some of the firefighters were able to be rescued from the basement, others were not. Seven firefighters perished, including some of those who were attempting to rescue their brothers. Thirteen firefighters were injured and loss and damage was over one million dollars. A memorial plaque stands as a constant reminder of that fatefull day and is located on the original building that still stands at the corner of Capitol and Quarrier Streets.

All of the buildings on the right were burnt... starting at the corner where we just turned...

Back in the day the buildings were wall to wall... it appears that if they are no longer needed they tear them down... and black top the space for parking.

So, I've worn out your patience... memories

Janet had our first child on Wednesday, November 20, 1963. She went into a coma after our daughter was born. I had a crisis, a seriously ill wife, and a new baby.

We lived in South Charleston, about 3 miles from the hospital... I finally went home to shower and get clean clothes. I was ordered to get some sleep by the Doctor and nurses.

On Friday, November 22, 1963 I was returning to the hospital by way of the Kanawha Blvd... I was very near this corner when all traffic stopped... people left their cars in the traffic lanes... they got out and approached other drivers... we all turned on our radios... listening wirh disbelief.

John F Kenedy had been shot in Dallas!

Janet was still in the coma, she didn't know about it for several days after President Kennedy was assinated. When she finally came out of it they were afraid that the shock of it would cause her to go into the convulsions again. She did get to watch the funeral on TV.

I'll bet that each of you older folks know exactly where you were at that moment in time. I was here.

After leaving Charleston we visited an Adena Indian Burial Mound in South Charleston.

I'm standing at the base of the mound at the corner of 7th Ave and D street. On the opposite side of the mound is US-60, also refered to as the Midland Trail.

I worked for 12 years (1962-74)just across the highway from here FMC InorganicChemicalsIt is now a brown field... the plant was torn down years after I left... the earth is so polluted that the property can't be used for anything.

Janet grew up here and went to high school here...

Things have gone down hill like most towns and cities all around the country... we left WV 40 years ago.
