When I was a kid we could find arrow heads many places in the area... in plowed ground after a rain, along stream banks, etc. When Janet and I lived in Sattes (a part of Nitro, WV) I found a small leather bag full of arrow points when I was digging a post hole. The leather was in bad shape but could be recogized

About 45 miles up the Kanawha river above what it now Charleston, WV was very important to the indians. There was an abundant supply of salt that boiled to the surface in springs at Malden and there was a huge outcrop of Flint at Campbells Creek just a couple of miles apart

An indian tribe would come to the area, gather the salt and dry it to crystals and leave the area... another tribe would move in and do the same thing... no one tryed to "own" the salt springs or to sell the salt rights to others (thats a greedy white man's way) There was no fighting... each tribe just waited their turn.

While in the area they'd move a couple of miles to the flint outcrop... they would build a very hot fire againest the flint wall then throw cold water on the flint... the "glass like" flint would shatter into slivers, they would collect the pieces and take them to other areas to nap them into arrow points and other tools.

One of those areas was where Janet and I lived down stream about 15 miles on the Kanawha River bank at Sattes. We found lots of the scrap flint... and broken points...

Some of the salt was probable traded to other tribes as the indians moved arround and some of the arrow points would eventually end up all over the area.

I started 1st grade in 1945... the end of WWII. Our history was much more into Danial Boone and Mad Anne Bailey... into indians and settlers, the 49ers Gold Rush, and the Cial war...

At halloween we were cowboys and indians, frontier scouts, or Abe Lincoln.... no one had store bought costumes... a few masks were available. A blanket and a feather... and a home made bow and arrow...

We'd bring our rock and points to school for show and tell...
