Within hours of the disaster back in 1967 we along with thousands of others went to the bridge. As we drove into Pt Pleasent and looked there was not a single piece of the bridge showing above water... no vehicles... nothing... just two piers sticking up, one on each side of the river. Thats the only way we could tell exactly where the bridge had been except for the approaches.
They never found all of the vehicles... bodies stayed missing.
We'll share pictures from Pt Pleasent soon.
Note: This area had another notable tragidy on Nov 14, 1970. Marshall University lost its whole football team in an aircrash just a few miles downstream in Huntington, WV. I lost 4 realitives in that one.
The population in the area is realitively small in this area... the losses piled up... and Viet Nam took it's toll.

Sleepy, today, as my husband and I were driving through St. Albans, WV to visit my sister, I was telling him about this thread and your pictures posted here about my hometown, St Albans. Lo and behold, I stop by here today and see that you were back in the area! Next time, drop me a line, I would love to buy you a cup of coffee.
Regarding the Silver Bridge, the Bridge between St Albans and Nitro was built the same year. My father told me that as a child and I have always been nervous when crossing it. My husband has fished under it for years, looking up...and has refused to cross it for years. Finally, this summer they replaced the St Albans/Nitro bridge.
I hope to spend some time this evening looking at the great pictures you have posted here. I have always wanted to visit Nova Scotia!

Lisa... stick around... I'll soon be posting several things from St Albans... including some pictures that were taken as the new bridge was being finished... we spent a couple of weeks boondocking several places in Kanawha Valley in October, 2013.

Janet is nervous as we cross this bridge... it is a replacement for the Silver Bridge that fell so long ago... it is the first time we have crossed the Ohio here since. It's emotional for those of us that are old enough to remember... much like JFK and 911... we all know where we were and what we were doing.

I tried to keep her mind busy... taking pictures as we crossed. It didn't work... I had to use photobucket to get the pictures somewhat level.

Just think... when the Silver Bridge dropped into the river 45 vehicles went down with it... some have never been found... there is a lot of current here and it's deep.
We are looking down river here, toward Huntington, WV. Three years later Marshal College (University) lost their whole football team, coaches, medical staff, and boosters in an airplane crash about 45 miles down river from here.
