Then I remembered... a Vented PlatCat needs a source of air to operate and discharge... I had built it in when installing the heater. (Silversand gently fussed at me about solving it at the time....)

I don't need no operation manual review!

The "new" smell went away within minutes of cracking the vent. There had been air infiltration aplenty through small leaks around the slideout or through outside storage compartments, etc. to keep the PlatCat catalyst happy....but the powder coat paint fumes were spreading with the radiant heat.

No pictures could be taken in the dark... I'll have to recreate the vent pics during day light.

Janet was happy when she woke up hours later... and I slept like a baby... knowing that we had safe economical heat... nothing to wake me except the bathroom (it's an old guy thing)

Love that vented Platcat. Worry free heat...

Perhaps a more fertile test ground would be in your old spot...

This morning 8F 25MPH Northwesterly wind off the bay.

Yesterday I tested our normal propane furnace in the Northstar and after 1 hour the temperature was 46F under the above conditions.

I plowed out your spot in case you head North !!!!

Woodhog

... thanks for thinking of us.... we'd love to be there. It's the journey through TN, VA, WV, PA, NY, VT, Quebec, Maine, New Brunswic to get there. Or we could add a few states and skip Quebec.

Woodhog has two homes on the ocean... the one that is located at our parking spot is several centuries old... with the most beautiful floors, wood work, sliding glass French pocket doors for climate control... modern but retaining the original look and feel.

He and his wife call the second one which is a short drive away and directly on the Atlantic Ocean their camp. It heads up one of the best beaches that we'd ever seen. It's only 75 or a 100 years old. They gave us a choice between the two.

Nova Scotia should be on everyones bucket list... everyone that we met went out of their way to welcome us... especially the Woodhogs.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Chet and Janet

I mounted a electrostatic filter outside the fender well access door... in the summer time it filters out dust and pollen when the fantastic fans are pulling air through the camper. Since it is in the area between the camper and the trucks side wall there is no way anyone can get in through the open access door.

Strangely enough... cold air doesn't come through it unless it is being pulled by a fan.

Note the latch at the right that allows us to secure the access door when the door is closed.

The PlatCat uses and exhausts very little air... the square inches of openning needed is very small.

Since the replacement cold air isn't pulled through the camper we never feel it... and the oxygen in the camper isn't used for combustion.

The latch holds the door open just the right amount... and is prevented from opening any further by the platcat itself and the original latch keeps if from closing.

In this picture you can see how much of an opening that is actually used to admit the filtered combustion make-up sir.

By setting the thermostat on the PlatCat at 70ºF and setting the forced air furnace at 65ºF we had the best of both worlds... our normal home temperatures and a back up if the PlatCat couldn't keep up.

When it was very cold the PlatCat ran continiously and the furnace came on once or twice a night.

I really like the PlatCat and I'm thinking about installing one in our house for emergency heat...our unvented gas hearer in the basement adds a lot of humidity to the house.
