The tow rating from the book is true for the base truck without any extra options added in. It does not include passenger weight over 150 pounds, the fifth wheel hitch or any cargo you carry. Therefore, it is very unlikely your realistic towing capacity is near 14K.

I recommend you use the RV Tow Check app to learn your truck's realistic towing capacity and then avoid buying a trailer with a GVWR exceeding the realistic towing capacity.

I don't have any problem maxing out the truck's ratings. All need to know realistically what their tow ready max ratings truly are.

Rvdreamer, we did that. We had a 04 f350 with 6.0 diesel. It was rated 20K gcw. Went to scales fully loaded. We weighed 19860. Went on several trips BUT it told us it was maxed out by the way it pulled on the flats. Told unhappy wife. No foothills or mountains until we get a larger truck.
We got in May a 6.7 ford f350 with max tow pkg. We went thru mountains and didn't hardly notice them other than the view.
This was my experience with maxing out.

F250 6.7L PSD 4X4 Lariat - Full tank, Husky 16k W hitch, me:
Steer Axle - 4720
Drive Axle - 3300
Total - 8020

With 2007 Keystone Challenger 29RKP under tow:
Steer Axle - 4740
Drive Axle - 5980 (vehicle total=10720)
Trailer Axles - 7780
Total - 18500

Trailer:
Pin Weight - 2680
Axle Weight - 7780
Total - 10460

About 700 over published tow vehicle GVWR (10000) but...
1320 under tow vehicle axle ratings (FGAWR=5940 + RGAWR=6100 = 12040)and...
5000 under tow vehicle GCWR.

Chucking like hell and still haven't figured it out [emoticon]

Hitch is tight and moves only 1/8" when locked onto king pin. Maybe pin weight is too heavy at 25.6%? Seams unlikely but I will try to shift some things to the back (or unload the garage) just to see if it helps.

If you can shift weight to the trailer,axles. I think things will be better for truck. Won't get the bounce going down the road.

I doubt if pin is too heavy, a bit on the high side, but I run with my fresh water tank full, as it is just forward of the axles, helps smooth the ride some.

Finally got on the scale and here is what I have.
Fully loaded ready to travel full tank, wife and two dogs.

TV front axle GAWR=4750 actuals without trailer and with 4160/4180
TV rear axle GAWR=6000 actuals without trailer and with 3160/5860
TV GVWR = 9000 actual without trailer and with trailer 7320/10040
CGWR = 20000 actual 18920
Kingpin weight 23% 2720
Trailer axle weight 11600

Vehicle is 2004 Dodge 2500 CTD 5.9 RWD 3.73 gears with Firestone ride rite airbags. B&W Companion slider.
Over on GVWR by 1040. Under on individual axles and CGWR.
Trailer pulls like a dream.
