Topic: Whats Your Real Weights? Truck and Trailer. The Real Deal

Posted By: BarbChapman1950 on 10/14/09 05:20pm

New to the forum - Reentering camping with an 02 Jayco Quest 5th wheel, 26 feet. Need a truck. I thought the trucks GVWR had to be over the weight of the trailer (with cargo, people, etc). Is that correct? Think the trailer is 8600 lbs,but am going to check with Jayco. Looks to us that no 1/2 ton would do it, so thinking 3/4 ton. Looking at this real weights post however, I am thinking I may have it wrong as it appears quite a few of the trailers exceed the tow vehicles rating? Can someone help?? Thanks!! Barb

Do a search in this forum for GVWR and stand back. You will find all the answers you need with some you don't! [emoticon]
Good luck and welcome back.

OK, I just got off the Cat Scales in Battle Creek Mi. 02 F-350, SRW, CC,4X4, 7.3PSD, auto. 5er is a 1997 30ft Wildwood. Steering axle 4980, drive 4580, trailer axle 6740. Why is my steering weighing more than my drive axle? DW and myself, and 1/2 tank of fuel. Can somebody explain this to me.

That's easy. Diesel engines are heavy. There's an article on esacpes.com (I think that's the right forum) talking about using Class 8 trucks for towing 5th wheels. In the article the author talks about avoiding a certain model of Cummins engine because without the weight of a real trailer you run the risk of being over weight on the front axle.

YES your fifth wheel is mounted to close to the cab. See if your fifth wheel is a adjestable. If so you need to move it back from 1 to 2 inches. 1 might do it for you.== GOOD LUCK Here is my truck frunt 5.160 Both 12.160 truck trailer 28.200+ both trailer axles 10.880

His 5th wheel might not be located to close to the cab. He should weigh his truck when empty to determine if the 5th wheel is adding any weight to the front axle. My truck (Dodge 2500 Cummins quad cab 4x4) weighs in around 4500lbs on the front axle without the trailer which is not much lighter than his truck.

I have a 2008 Ford F350 DRW King ranch. I weighed it soon after I bought it in 2008 and the weights empty were steer axle 4780lb Drive axle 3680lb gross weight 8460lb. I weighed it with my Newmar Cypress trailer yesterday (10-19-2009) and the weights were steer axle-4720lb Drive axle-6840lb Trailer axle-11700lb Gross weight-23260lb. According to my owners manual this truck is rated for a combined gross weight of 23500lb. My wife wasnt in the truck and ther were no groceries or clothes in the trailer but other that that it was pretty much ready for a trip. 1/4 tank water and full propane.
