How do I know how much I can carry? I am going to buy a 5th wheel upgrading from my tag along. I have 2002 Chevy 2500 HD with 6.0L gas suicide doors cab and 6 foot bed.
I put 5 people in the cab so I know I have to add up everyone and everything I put in the truck. But, how do I know how heavy of a trailer I can pull? Does the 3/4 ton truck mean I am suppose to only put 1,500 pounds on the pin?
If I add up the trailer and truck weights (loaded), what is the max I am suppose to stay under?

Hop on the scales evey now and then just to see how it's Going. Figure as long as I stay under the 23,000 lb combined weight I'm good to go. I usually top out at about 22,700 but am always a little over if I have a couple extra of passangers and their stuff.

16 pages of great information on truck and trailer weights.
I still haven't gone to the scales with my new F-350. I'm waiting on my RDS 91 gal aux. tank and to get all the goodies I want in the tool box. Then I'll be ready to head to the scales for a real weight ticket. I'm going to take the trailer too; I know it's been gaining weight like a weight lifter at winter time[emoticon]
I'll report back soon.

We have a 2003 F-350 pulling a 38 ft Everest 5th wheel and I have not had a weight problem requiring air bags. I did run the rig across the scale to get loaded and empty weights. When pulling I run 50 lbs air in the front tires and 65 lbs in the rear. When empty I run 45 lbs front and 40 lbs rear according to the load chart I got. I guess it all depends on how much king pin weight you have and the load recommendations of the truck manufacturer. I have empty = 7000 ttl - 4060 front and 2940 rear. Pulling I am 21100 ttl = 13960 trailer = 4340 frt - 5880 rear king pin weight 3080.

We were coming home from 2 weeks in the mountains. Water tank on trailer was empty (100 gal), water tank on deck deck of truck was empty (300 US gal). had 2 quads in garage of trailer, 1 quad was missing off of deck (800 lbs). Fuel station on trailer was empty (40 gal). Other than that we were full load when we weighed up.

Steering axle-- 9680 lbs- good for 11000 lbs

Drive Axle-- 13178 lbs- good for 23000 lbs

Trailer axles (3)-- 15510 lbs- good for 19500 lbs

Jeep (2 axles)-- 3278 lbs

TOTAL Weight-- 41646 lbs- good for 80,000 lbs MCGVW
