2008 F350 DRW Lariat 4x4 long bed 6.4 PS. Truck max GVRW is 13,000 lbs. Total GCVW 23,500 Truck with fuel and 2 people. 5340 front 4240 rear Total unloaded truck 9,580 lbs. 2006 Everest 323P Rear Kitchen Gross vech. weight is 14,200 lbs. Front Axle 4,800 Rear Axle 5,260 Total Trailer Axle weights 10,060 Total weight of Trailer and Truck with full Propane and 20 gallons of water is 22,680 lbs. Under GCVW by 820 lbs. 22,680 - 10,060 Trailer - 9,580 truck is 3,040 hitch weight. 10,060 axle plus hitch 3,040 is 13,100 lbs total trailer weight. 20% of 13,100 is 2,620 suggested hitch weight. I'm under everywhere except hitch weight, where I am over by 420 lbs. My total truck GVRW is 12,620, under by 380 lbs. I'm legal, a little tongue heavy, but very little wiggle room. Truck pulls it nicely, but I have some of that Rear Kitchen bounce. I'm reluctant to move any weight from the front of the trailer to the middle or worse back of the trailer. Guess I just need to get rid of some junk in the basement! |

I talked with GMC, the local guru on towing, and anybody else that's had an opinion on this and my goal became to stay under 10K. Not only for the license, but the truck actually performs well stock. I am adding a tranny cooler, K&N filter and Magna Flow exhaust. I expect to pick up another 30hp and 11 ft-lbs of torque. As everyone told me I wouldn't win any races, and I have more than enough truck, but I can pull Cajon Pass in So Cal at 55 mph (the speed limit) with no less than 35 mph at the steepest grade near the top at 2500 rpm. I could most certainly run it to the floor and maintain 55 bottom to top, but what's the point. I'm getting 8 mpg with trailer and about 12-13 mpg without. I'm sure there's a few here with opinions that have loads of experience, so please jump in! I'm glad I found this place because all of my homework was by myself, and so far I think I did it right. Here's my stock 2003 Silverado, 2500 HD D/A LS EC Long Bed 2009 Keystone Montana 2980RL Rating / Scale Steer Axle 4,800 / 4,240 Drive Axle 6,084 / 5960 Vehicle w trailer 9,200 / 10,200 Vehicle w/o trailer / 7,500 Max Load as noted 2,655 / 2,700 Trailer Axle / 10,000 Combined 22,000 / 20,040 Question I have is, if I am underweight on all axles, but over on vehicle w trailer by 1000 lbs, should I be concerned? I barely have 500lbs of cargo. The trailer weighs 11,200 empty. Thanks for your response. Don't shoot until you see the fear in their eyes! |

Our 2005 2500HD CC SB 4X4 6.0 and 2006 Mountaineer 319BHS ready to go for a weekend: Axle Scale / Rating Steer 3600 / 4800 Drive 5320 / 6084 Gross 8920 / 9200 Trailer 9120 / 10,160 (tandem axles) Overall 18040 / 16,000 (GCWR) Every axle is within specs, however my GCWR is exceeded by just over a ton. If my truck had the 8.1 gasser or the Duramax, it would have a 22,000 GCWR. So, brakes and frame are the same as the more powerful engines, I'll just climb the hills a tad slower. Pickup alone weigh 3540 on the steer, and 2940 on the drive axle, giving me a trailer weight of 11,560 and a pin weight of 2440. Montana says this trailer will have a hitch weight of 1770, I suppose that could be possible empty....Brochure gives trailer GVWR as 11,930 but sticker on the side of the camper says 12,105 for a GVWR. Tires are ST235/80R16 Load Range E with a load rating of 3560 per tire. The truck rides very nice and level with the stock suspension. Brochure also says the trailer weighs 9690 dry, so I have added 1870 pounds of water, propane, clothes, food, blocks, beer, etc. Hank 2005 Chev 2500HD CC SB 6.0 4L80E 4.10 2006 Mountaineer 319 |

It is my observation that virtually all of the Chevy Duramax's 6.6 (including ourselves) are appearing to be exceeding the max vehicle weights (GVWR) of 9,200 lbs. Admittedly we were over by only 400 lbs (when loaded) but this seems to be the case with most of us. (We will have to shift loads to the rear of the 5'ver and dump the firewood) We had safely, with no control issues either in normal or emergency situations, towed this way for over 10,000 miles. Some who have posted, have weights of over 1000 lbs or more over this. Some recognize the issue, some don't. While it is normally the custom to have a considerable amount of "cushion" in the "safe" or "maximum" gross weights, it is disconcerting to know that we were doing this, and it could have legal implications, not to mention insurance issues. I wonder if this is also the case with the other makes and models? It was also interesting that many focus on the max cargo or pin weights and ignore the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) which is the most limiting. We were within all of the axle ratings, and cargo weight limits and still exceed the Gross vehicle Weight limit. We focused on the wrong things. 1997 Dodge 2500 HD with Cummins Diesel (automatic): Loaded to go camping with myself, wife, hitch, gear and full fuel: Steer Axle 3780 Drive Axle 2620 Gross Weight 6400 GVWR* 8800 TV and Cougar 293 SAB Loaded: (No water in tanks) Steer Axle 4080 (GAWR 4500) Drive Axle 4440 (GAWR 6000) Trailer Axle 7920 Gross Weight 16440 Gives Loaded 5er weight of 10040. True Hitch Weight Loaded: 1820 (within limits) Axle weights within limits TV and 5er GCWR 440 over--gonna have to lose some gear and maybe make wife walk (just kidding). Interesting 5er weight because empty weight is listed just shy of 9000# by manufacturer and I can almost guarantee I haven't added 1040 lbs. of gear.
