Why is my steering weighing more than my drive axle? DW and myself, and 1/2 tank of fuel. Can somebody explain this to me.
That's easy. Diesel engines are heavy. There's an article on esacpes.com (I think that's the right forum) talking about using Class 8 trucks for towing 5th wheels. In the article the author talks about avoiding a certain model of Cummins engine because without the weight of a real trailer you run the risk of being over weight on the front axle.

That's an easy question. You are pulling a light trailer. 8500# for a fifth wheel is light. Your pin wt is probably 1500-1700#. Not a whole lot. Ram-guy is also correct; diesel motors are heavy! Takes a lot of pin wt to even it out!

Thanks guys for the replies, makes sense about the oil burner being heavier. This is our first diesel truck, we were pulling the 5er with an under powered, over worked 3/4 ton gasser. We were getting about 3 gas stations to the mile with it, now we get 12-13 mpg depending where my foot is. I picked up a transfer tank, 105 gal, now I wonder if it will overload my steer axle? We hope to hit the road as part-timers in 2011. Again thanks for the help, this site has been fantastic in answering a lot of our questions!

Thank you for making this a sticky. We are in the market for a fifth wheel and a TV. I've been reading this thread all morning. Question for anyone....I can't tell by the posters which TV are diesel. Sorry for the stupid question. Of course, I have to do all the research while dear husband is at work. I know he said diesel F250 or 350. I will post in another thread for a recommmendation, however, I just need to know which TV's are diesels so I can start a spread sheet.
This stay-at-home mom says thanks for the help.

So from Long2213 numbers we see a 5% variation from average to heaviest and I know my RV is 5% of side to side. So if you don't get the reas axle by axle side to side loading you can be off by 10%.
When you chack the load and inflation tables for your size, type and load range tires do you apply at least a 10% factor?
And have you confirmen your pressure gauge is not reaing high?
And do you check every day tou travel?
