We went for a short camping trip this weekend at Lake Powhatan in the Pisgah National Forest, NC. The trip was cut short when DH developed an abcessed tooth.

Moraine Park CG, RMNP (CO) - August 2007

We really enjoyed this 3 night trip. Woke up the last morning to the sounds of Elk bugling in the distance.

We had a decent interior spot, with some views, but a lot of room out back for the kids to play and explore.

Lots of things to do in RMNP -- could have kept busy for a week.

A few of the better spots had views like this:

More pictures from Moraine Park, RMNP

This was ~ mid-August ... kind of warm (for me) around the front range of Colorado (Denver), but delightful in the mtns.

BTW, the days were nice temps and only got hot when hiking between 1 and 4pm. The nights were cool, great sleeping weather ... and no furnace required to be comfy. Each day, we had a late afternoon thunderstorm develop over the mtns and be done in about an hour. The girls made some friends from a neighboring campsite.

This was the view from our front door. Even with trailers next door, we could see the beautiful snow on the peaks.

Moraine has some giant Ponderosa Pines unlike anything I've seen before in Colorado. They dwarfed my 7 year old who was standing on a large (2-3' high) boulder.

My daughters -- happy to be growing up in AMERICA !

On the weekend, it got a little crowded, but it wasn't too bad at all. Everyone seemed to have a generator and ran it about an hour a day in the afternoon.

ALl in all, I was glad we went here -- Moraine was the nicest CG in my opinion. Certainly has the best views. The other loops were more woodsy, but still nice.

This park has so many nice trails and lakes to explore. You could never do them all.

Just a short walk down from our campsite was a road which has many different trails on it. THere is also a shuttle bus which runs every 15 minutes and can take you to the various trailheads for free, all day long. There was a nice outdoor auditorium and shows nightly. At night, it was very quiet and peaceful. No wild parties past 10pm at all.

Steamboat Lake SP, CO - early July, 2007

About 35 min North of Streamboat Springs, CO.

This is amazingly beautiful country and rather unspoiled and not so crowded.

We were actually staying at Pearl Lake CG, but made a daily trip over to this more developed lake for swimming at the "beach" (Colorado style). The drive over is about 6-7 minutes and scenic.

The campgrounds on Steamboat Lake are also very nice, some with hookups. THe best (in my opinion) were on the water with no hookups.

I kid you not, the water was actually pretty nice for 9000+ ft. There was an abundance of crayfish for the kids to catch nearby.

Pearl Lake SP, CO - July 6-8, 2007

The girls learned to fish on this trip. To my surprise, about all they wanted to do was "go fishing". We didn't catch much but saw lots of huge trout in the very clear water.

Wildflowers were everywhere. This picture doesn't do justice.

We were on the upper loop at the end, and it was very secluded and peaceful. Its still not a very far walk down to the lake, maybe 100 yards?

THe spot was a challenge to back into, lots of trees and backing into a spot on a corner made it a little tricky.

At a lot of parks, our 22' Coyote HTT is the punk on the block (small). But a Pearl, we were one of the biggest rigs we saw. I wouldn't advise anything much bigger than a 25' rig at most of the spots. There are a couple larger spots but not many.

A lot of the spots at Pearl Lake have the picnic table and fire ring down from the campsite pad.

There was an abundance of dead wood and fallen logs around. The girls honestly enjoyed those logs more than ANY playset I've seen them plan on before.

You can't tell from these pictures, but Pearl has very tall trees and we slept later than we EVER do, because it was so quiet, dark and peaceful.

The bugs were a little bad, being so sheltered, but by the lake it would have been better, but a lot windier.

This was the winner of "most relaxing trip of the summer" for me. Also might have tied with Moraine for most scenic. Probably more scenic, and less people.

Rabbit Ear pass, going back towards Denver was a very steep tow. Never broke 45 mph for maybe 20 minutes. Its about 4-5 hours from Denver.

WOW! I want to go to Colorado and camp. We thought that our campsite was outstanding (it was) but you have us beat.

Trybrynn,

Thanks for posting your beautiful pictures. We traveled though your fine State in June. Spent a day in Breckenridge on our way to Utah. Then on the way back we stayed at my sister in laws ranch, very close to Castle Rock, for three nights. I would like to go back to Colorado in a couple of years. RMNP will be high on my list of places to see.

I have never been west of the "great river" but when people like you share these pictures I am in absolute awe in the beauty of your area of the Country.

Thank you for sharing - I look forward to the day where I can travel out there.

The reservations for RMNP / Moraine need to be made by May (for the summer months) ... I could have had a better spot, if I had made the reservations earlier!

I have some pictures from Sterling Res SP, CO -- It was nice, but nothing real scenic. Good walleye fishing. If your into star gazing, its really good, because its REALLY dark and far from any city lighs.
