Topic: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Posted By: Scottiemom on 04/11/19 04:15am

We were visiting our son in Florida one spring. After about 10 days we headed north to Indiana and when we got there, we were taking our bikes off the back. We have recumbents with large soft seats that we keep covered on the road. As we pulled one cover off, there on the seat was a nest with 3 eggs in it. It had been probably at least 2 weeks since we left Florida because we always go see our daughter in Virginia after Florida. So they were obviously not viable anymore. That poor mama probably is still looking for her nest.

Good morning everyone. Well Dan, we might have to start calling you the bird man. We had a similar experience years ago with a nest in the pin box of the camper, didn't notice it until we got to our camping spot and found three baby birds in a nest inside the box. I tried to keep them alive until we got back home but they didn't make it.

We have Blue birds in the bird houses we have set up around the yard, hope they raise their babies and decided to stay with us.

Sue went to Ava's house last night to baby sit their fur babies, Lizzie has been looking for her thinking I have done something with her. Spring has finally arrived. Yesterday the folks in the neighborhood were out cutting grass. Our new neighbor has a beautiful stand of grass. I don't recognize what kind of grass it is, something new to our area, but it sure has filled in since he moved in. At first I thought it was a winter grass but he told me it was good for both summer and winter.

Dixie and Suzie are well, waiting on me to get ready to take them for a walk, so I had better get moving. Have a blessed day and be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Speaking of birds, I have a purple martin house and a dozen gourds for purple martins in my back yard. I constantly fight with English sparrows building nests in the houses and gourds. Twice a week I have to take the houses and gourds down to remove nests. The martins have started building nests and I saw eggs in several of the nests on Sunday. I love listening to the martins sing and play around in the mornings and evenings. The martins usually arrive at my location in mid to late January. They stay until late June or early July and then head back to South America for the winter to molt. Purple Martins are almost 100% dependent on man and were almost extinct back in the 1960s until people stared housing them. English sparrows and starlings were brought to this country back in the 1700s from Europe and they have really decimated a lot of different species of birds. I have special half moon holes in my houses and gourds that the starlings can't fit through but the small sparrows get in the housing and will fill the entire compartment with grass with a cave in the middle. They will even build nests on top of martin nests. I lost a lot of baby martins and martin eggs one year because I didn't clean out the sparrow nests quick enough.

Good morning everyone. I hope Pickles had a great birthday, by the way how old is Pickles?

Boy I don't know what is going on with me but I have so many things it's hard to tell what is wrong. I don't know if it is the reaction from the new medicine Dr. Goldsmith prescribed or its a late reaction from my visit to Dr. Flanagan. I hope whatever it is it passes quickly.

Dixie and Suzie are fine as is Lizzie. Sue is doing good, I am the only one that a bit under the weather. Yesterday I called Magnolia Springs State Park and extended our stay for a few more days. Sue and I like Magnolia Springs, it's a nice little park and it is close to Waynesboro. I really miss the old home place, lots of beautiful memories. Maybe we will be able to stop and pay a visit to our old home at 504 Jones Avenue. I would love to see what has been going on since we left nine years ago. The neighborhood hasn't changed that much since we left, pretty much the same folks living on the block.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Pickles turned 8 years old.

She had a special dinner with some chicken. One of her favorites. Then of course she had her very best favorite for desert, Dairy Queen. [emoticon]
