So glad you guys had a good time. How did Old Fella do with the grandchildren? Rich, I think you have had a lot of stress with Old Fella during the last month. Look how much has happened and changed during the last month. Hope you got a little rest during your down time.
I had to laugh when you said Old Fella lets you know he is there and wants a treat. I think treats are the first thing they learn to 'con' us out of. They sure can be sweet when there is a 'cookie' involved.
Great to have you back and look forward to reading your posts.
P.S. Is your vet charging extra for the follow up trips on the heartworm treatment? You said you had to give him injections and make several trips to the office. Let us know.

Okay, I have finished putting things up for the night so I have some time to tell you about the trip.
We arrived at Cherokee KOA at about 4:30 in the afternoon. Old Fella rode well. He stood up for about the first hour before settling down on the back seat for a little shut eye. So by the time we arrive Old Fella and Levi were wired and ready to go. While we set up camp I put Old Fella on a rope to see how he reacted to the whole setup. I had carried the kennel cage for just in case, but never needed it. Old Fella watched us set up the camper as if he were guiding us through it step by step. I hung the RV Open Road banner across the front of the camper, looked great, and took pictures of it which I will post tomorrow. Old Fella was so absorbed in everything that went on, it was as if he were playing back some old memories.
He ate well that evening and when we went for our walk to the doggie run he was filled with excitement. Boy he really came to life when we got to the wooded area and it had that deep woods look to it and a river ran near by that made a very loud rushing sound as the waters ran over the rocks and small waterfalls. It was as if Old Fella was home or he recognized the sounds he heard or the scents he smelled, what ever it was it really turned him on.
When we got back to the camper he wanted to go inside and lay on his bed, oh my how he does love his bed, and just let out a sigh and went to sleep.
The next morning he was ready to go outside and explore some more and also to do his thing. After our morning walk he came back and ate his breakfast after which I gave him his shot, {very large needle} of antibiotics He gets one shot every morning to fight the infection that has been cause by the dead heart worms leaving the heart and going into the lungs. Wednesday he was running a fever because of this but he is fine now. Anyway back to our Saturday morning. Old fella Walked with me over the campground and then sat outside with me while I attempted to build a fire. He looked as if he wanted to show me how to build a real fire, but not wanting to embarrass me he just let me do it on my own.
That afternoon, Ava, Allison and their families arrived with their four furries and they all got acquainted, went well. That night Old Fella sat next to me at the campfire and put his head in my lap, or would put one of his paws on my leg. He sat there with me all night just keeping an eye on me I suppose. We went to bed about 11 o'clock and Old Fella went straight to his bed. It must have been about 3 in the morning when felt a cold nose on my hand, it was Old Fella telling me he had to go, se we went.
The next day Sunday, we went to Dollywood and left Old Fella and Levi in the camper, the other furries stayed in their respected campers. We got back about 4 in the afternoon and Old Fella met me at the door. After Levi and Old Fella's trip to the doggie run I took Old Fella back to the camper. I needed to go to the store so I left Old Fella outside with Sue and Levi and started walking. Then I heard this mournful howl and barking, I turned to see Old Fella calling for me to come back to get him, so I did {boy he has got my number}. I took Sue and Levi with us so Sue could wait outside with Old Fella while I went inside the store. He was so happy to get to go with his dad.
Monday morning we all got up ate breakfast and then went for our morning walk, came back and packed up and made the trip back home.
I had several people ask about the banner and that was their mistake because it then took them an hour to get away, but not before they heard Old Fella's story. By Sunday evening word had spread around the campground about Old Fella and some came by just to see for themselves.
We had a very good time and I was glad to see Old Fella handled going away from home so well and how he greeted the rest of the family. He did so well we are going to take him to Disney World in Florida November 6-12. This is his reward for being such a good boy!
I feel it was more than mere circumstances that brought our lives together in that campground and I feel so bonded to him now, it is as if we have been together all of our lives. Last Tuesday night when he was so sick and I thought he was going to die, it broke my heart to think of losing him so soon after his rescue. But now I see how through the illness we have become so bonded, it is as if our lives are now intertwined together in such way that as long as one of us lives, the other lives on also. I think of those lonely, cold, dark nights he spent in the woods by himself and say to him, with God as my witness old boy you will never have to spend another night by yourself in the wet and the cold. You will never go hungry neither will you be by yourself when in pain or in sickness. As long as you live you will live by my side, sleep by my bed and hear the soothing sound of my voice as it reasures you, you will never be alone again.
Tomorrow I will post pictures from our trip.

Gotta agree that Old Fella is one smart dog ... he sure chose a fine, fine human with which to associate. Most unfortunate that it took so many years, but when you're fussy and only want the best, I suppose the wait is worth it!
