I took the sofa out today. It came out quickly. I messed around with the bump-out thing for quite a while before I figured out how to remove it. Here's the sequence:

REMOVE WINDOW VALANCE

REMOVE ALL EDGE TRIM

REMOVE FRONT PANEL

REMOVE TOP LEDGE
[image]

REMOVE THE UNIT

NASTY CAULK ON WALL. I tore the wall paper a little in trying to remove it. I shaved it down and will cover it or paint it or something.

READY FOR THE BED

The bed is going to have to be more complicated than I thought. For one thing the cargo door frame protrudes into the room about 1/4". I made a scale drawing of the two walls and I think I've come up with a plan. As simple as possible, but no simpler, as the saying goes.

Currently RV-less but not done yet.

Wow! That was fantastic. You must do this a lot, or else if you are looking for a new avenue/occupation to exercise your talents...

I was wondering about spills above the outlet, and am glad you address this w/ GFCI.

One dumb question, in case I do not find a piece laying around, what size/type wire do I need to get, and do they sell short pieces at HD.

Burl, thanks, I'm glad it was helpful.

The materials list would be:
-GFCI outlet and cover plate
-metal box with mounting ears and built in romex clamps
-10 feet or so of 14/2 (14 gauge, 2 wires plus ground wire) "romex" wire
-handful of cable clamps
-a 1/2" romex box connector
[image]

I don't know how short of a piece of romex you'll have to buy. Probably 25' at least, I suppose.

When you cut the hole in the paneling, you'll have to allow for various protruding parts on the sides of the metal outlet box. Or if the box's mounting ears are removable brackets like mine were, I was able to remove the lower bracket and slip the box into the hole from the rear, then slide the bracket into place from the front side and screw it back into place from the rear. All in all, messing with that box mounting is the hardest part of the job IMO. And it's not that hard.

Another tip, if you look closely at the GFCI outlet installed, versus the one I used at the end for the wiring tutorial, you will be able to see that I removed the mounting ears on the front of the installed one. They are designed to be bent back and forth and removed if desired. If I had left them, they would have interfere with the mounting screws of the box itself.

To remove the outer sheath of the romex, take your utility knife and carefully cut the sheath right down the middle. This way you are cutting over top of the bare copper wire, and not hitting the insulation of the other two. Peel the sheath back and then you can pretty much just tear it around the circumference to remove it. In the outlet box you want the sheath to just enter the box, and then have about 6" of free wires to work with. You will bend them in a Z pattern when you have made the hookups, so they will compress nicely into the back of the box as you push the outlet into place.

In the panel box, same thing, the sheath ends just inside the box. Look at the others as a guide. Then you need probably a foot or more of free wires. If you have extra, either shorten it prior to connecting, or fold it out of the way.

Martha was also impressed - you're at natural at vid tutorial.

The little 1/2" Romex clamp goes on the back of the breaker box?

I used to employ many minimum wage workers so I learned not to overlook things when explaining something. [emoticon]

Hey, I should mention, I made a 46 second video with a similar purpose, to show someone on a forum how I was doing something that I was trying to explain. (How to use a tire inflator to remove and replace golf club grips.) Anyway, it now has a huge number of views and I got a check for over $100 from Google AdSense! What a country! I have wondered what else I could do like that, but never have applied myself to it.

Yes, the clamp... you take a screwdriver and push on one of the smaller sized cutouts on the back of the breaker box. Then bend the cutout "coin" back and forth till it breaks off. The clamp goes into that hole. You can tighten it in place simply by holding the nut with your fingers while turning the more accessible clamp on the outside of the box. The nut has a grippy surface and will grab the box. Otherwise, it would be a big fight to get a pair of pliers in there past all the wires.

You'll probably make a mistake or two which you will learn from, but as long as you work safely, you'll get it all working. It's a very nice simple way to do your first electrical handyman thing.

THX

I am pretty sure I want to do this project, esp now that you've made it so easy. Like you, we use a small elec heater/fan instead of the propane furnace. Works fine in this little RV down to 30 deg, or so. On coll nights when no AC is needed, we like just running its fan for background sound (fantastic fan can make it too cool).

I do urge you to pursue vid tutorials -- you have all the right stuff to make helpful vids.

Snow and Burl

Thanks for the links to Cheeze1's photos, I think I will be replacing the jack knife sofa with something similar to Cheeze1's mod.I have spoken with a handyman who has agreed to do most of the work i have planned for the RV, including intalling an inverter to run the TV,DVD player and laptop. Right now I'm in the planning and exploring options phase. Last night I removed the TV from the overhead console.

This Forum is a wealth of information and ideas, keep up the great contributions.

Ralph
