Is that emitter actually emitting? Or just an antenna that looks kinda scary?

HappyJack you are a devil!
We were headed to Fl about a month ago with friends in a rental Class A. His brakes gave out and we never made it out of their complex. All were fine but the rig was a mess, 'landing' in a bunch of bushes and mulch.
I'd like to know how other people plan the trek to Fl.

Artum,
Yes, it does. I tried to find it again on Ebay Auto and post a link it but could not find it again. PM me if you want any details on my install. It is pretty simple.

There is an interesting study by the South Carolina DOT on how radar detector users behave when they think a trooper is nearby. It was done in construction zones that used "drone" radars that emit constantly. They also estimated in their study that 12% of trucks over 10K GVW used radar detectors which violates federal law. In short, they slow down and become alert as long as they detect a radar signal. I don't care what they do up the road as long as they are careful near me.

Cheeze,

No trip this Christmas, maybe next year.

I searched a lot too. Couldn't find any 'emitting' radar devices, other than expensive radar guns and equipment for police use.
Sure would be a neat unit to own.

McZippie,
I don't know how to link from Ebay but it is currently item 380173397462 under the search feature using RADAR>>CB,HAM&SHORTWAVE for $85.00.

I had to make some modifications including the control box to have an on-off switch so it wasn't plug and play like a wireless rear camera would have been but since I was a radar electronics tech in the Navy I figured it out. It's still going strong after two years on the back ladder. Just for entertainment value it was worth the money.

The X and K band old police units have been showing up on EBAY for under $100. I picked up two Decatur MVR-725's K banders for $59 and $79 by watching the Buy it Now.

PM me if you have any questions.

McZippie - Your link is correct in that it takes you to the (unique) stated eBay item. I read the description and it went right over my head. I have no idea if it was even in the english language. I never heard of a "microwave Doppler ranging radar A0-40 rad". I also looked at the pictures and that confused me even more. Of course I'm easily confused. [emoticon]

Basically it is a 1980's collison advoidence radar that was made for semis. As designed, when an overtaking semi closed too fast on a vehicle ahead it warned the semi driver with lights and sound from a dash mounted box. It was speedometer cable controlled so the faster the semi went the higher output and farther the radar beam went out. The new micro computer controlled units are now showing up on high end cars, same idea just a lot more sophisicated and mucho expensive.

The reason it mimicks a police radar is that it is emitting a 24 GHz signal which is near what police K band radars used. It's not exactly the same but the radar detectors can't tell the difference. K band is being slowly phased out by newer Ka band units but the K type will be around for a long time. Some states like Ohio many and localities still use 10 GHz`X band designed in the 1950's.

I liked this unit because the radar head was waterproof as designed for front ends of semi's, could be mounted on the ladder, the cables and wiring harness reached the whole lenght of the rig, plus the cost was right. Also I like to tinker.

As opposed to the person overtaking you doing 85 in a construction zone? It's a lawless jungle out there on the interstate and we are the slow moving wilderbeasts. Sometimes I wish I could deploy spike strips like they do on TRU TV.[emoticon]
